Pope Francis has died.

I know to a lot of people on the left and in the LGBTQ+ community, he wasn’t exactly seen as a holy herald of progressive values. That said I think he was more helpful to our community than we have ever really given credit.

The Catholic Church is hugely entrenched in the past. They may not ever accept gay marriage within our lifetime. But if you compare Pope Francis to any other Pope that came before him, he did more to progress the Catholic Church than anyone else ever has. He constantly spoke out saying that the church needed to accept LGBTQ+ members. He has denounced laws that criminalise homosexuality. He supported same sex civil unions—which I was literally taught was evil and dangerous when I was in Catholic high school. Transgender people can be baptized and same sex couples can be blessed because of him.

He was never enough, of course. He has affirmed the teaching that gay marriage is not spiritually possible and prior to becoming pope he opposed the legalization of same sex marriage. He has said gay children should seek psychiatric care. He has also been even less accepting of transgender people than same sex couples.

But at the same time he was the most empathetic Pope to have existed in the past several hundred years. I have left the church because I no longer believe in God, but I do recognize that the Catholic Church has power over huge swaths of the world. My mother still believes in her Catholic faith and has always stood by this idea: it’s impossible to move a behemoth organisation like the Church overnight. She stays in the community because she wants it to become better. She pushes, in her own small way, a little bit every day towards what she thinks is right. In this conversation, that is the acceptance of LGBTQ+ youths. Pope Francis was helpful in moving the Church away from a stance of hate. Now I hope that whoever the cardinals choose next for pope is someone who joins her in pushing that ball forward.

hi all, this is oddly specific but a friendly reminder to check up on your queer/trans friends with catholic backgrounds today!

the pope is dead. there are varying feelings going around this, but many of us are scared because pope franics was honestly relatively considerate of the lgbtq+ community (for a pope), and the next pope is not super likely to be, which affects way more than you'd think in some religious communities and households.

sending love to all 🤍

Christianity is actually really cool

I just got done binging Wendigoon's old series on Dante's Divine Comedy, and I have to say, it really gave me an appreciation for just how awesome Christian writings, and by extent the bible really are. It's so hard to appreciate the cool aspects of Christianity these days because so many people in Gen Z associate it with right-wing politics and annoying preachers. It's much easier when you are allowed to take in these ideas without people pressuring you to believe a certain thing about it.

And sure, there are still many ideas I disagree with, but the ideals of virtue in helping others and the way it's explained in the Christian cannon are really inspiring to me. The reputation of Christianity would be so much better with secular people if there were more Christians willing to explain Christianity in a manner that wasn't so pushy and judgmental.

Anyways, I just felt inspired to write this post and put my thoughts out there. Check out Wendigoons videos on Dante's Divine Comedy if you ever get the chance.

That pope openly spoke against misogyny and mass rape of women and girls. He openly tried to crack down on pedophilia in the church. He spoke often of the damages caused by radical regimes and fascism. He also called up churches in war zones and such to check if they needed help from the Vatican. He often left his palace and preformed work even most cardinals would consider “beneath someone of their standing”.

Overall he was legit a man of god who practiced the word more than any pope in our modern time. The Catholic Church is lesser for his death and while I have issue with the church he wasn’t a problem by a long shot. Imagine being so lost in your hate boner you attack a progressive fuckin pope who saved more lives and helped more women and girls than any celebrity or has been author could hope too.

I’d shame you but shame requires the ability to feel emotions and you lost that many years ago I’m guessing.

Christ died for me, I NEED to radically change for Him. I cannot without Him, though, nor do I believe that I'd truly want to without Him changing me already.

Nevertheless, I need to change from who I am now, who has already been changed from who he was.

Watching Pope Francis funeral and I just can’t help but get choked up. He was such a good man and truly embodies what it means to be Catholic. I pray we will get a pope who loves.

You don’t think Mary knew what it was to sacrifice?

Don’t think she spent every day of her son’s life wondering if it would be his last?

Don’t think she asked herself if his first steps would be his last?

Which of the times he told her goodbye would be the final one?

Which of the miracles he preformed would paint the target on his back?

Which of the gods he opposed would be gifted his head, Mary’s heart resting aside it?

You don’t think she grew to resent her God?

The man who gifted her the most precious of things, for the sole purpose of taking him away?

You don’t think she warred with herself for questioning God’s will?

Don’t think she ever wondered why it had to be her?

Did she ever look at the people amongst her and wonder why they deserved salvation?

Ever question why they should live while her child should not?

Ever pray to take his place?

Ever blame herself for what was to come?

For it was not simply God who made her child, she accepted him. She agreed.

Is she not as guilty and morally objectionable as those she scorns?

Is she not as blood coated as those who hammers the nails?

Mary, who knew the fate that beheld the lamb once it reached the wooden alter, cradled it in her arms.

The lamb felt warmth. The lamb felt love. The lamb looked upon his mother and saw the good in humanity. So what was the lamb to do but step upon the alter himself?

What could he have done but lay his head before the knife, in reverence to the woman who carried him there?

How was the lamb to repay his mother’s kindness with damnation? When she above all deserved absolution.

Mary raised her son with love, kindness and faith. Praying what she knew would occurs never came to pass. What else was she to do?

Her son felt the love and kindness she gave with no ask of repayment, saw her faith. Believing the good in humanity flowed and shined from her. What else was he to do?
