Talking about myself with myself
Hey guys,
Today I want to talk about myself. About my interests and my character. Well ... you have to know, I can't judge myself very well, especially because my self-confidence isn't that great. But I'll try it. ;3 I'm actually a very open minded and happy person. At least I try to take everything positively and keep a clear head - even if that doesn't always work. But I'm a also quiet person. I first look and watch my surroundings and the people around me before I judge and act. I am very attentive and vigilant. This often helps me to understand people in their actions and facial expressions, even if i often only see the eyes. One look is always worth a thousand words. I can also empathize with others and understand why they act or think that way. I have many hobbies and interests - often which many people find boring or uninteresting. Like astronomy and history. But I also love to paint or draw or read books. I am a huge bookworm! I also love to look at old photo albums and old pictures and indulge in memories. It always feels so good, and I appreciate the time I spent with my family and friends even more. I also love Polaroid-Kameras! I think, because you can't take that many pictures with them, you always shoot the most beautiful moments and so the pictures have an unbelievably great emotional value.I'm also very interested in video games - especially story games. Like 'Life is strange' or ‘Sims’.-Yes, guys, Sims is also a story game ;).At least I think so... I love to care for traditions. Just as I love to be with my family. When we're not arguing - but that's human and normal too. I think it's good when you speak your mind openly and stay honest with each other. Even if I'm not always the best role model. Actually, I'm not in a lot of things ... oops ..Well, I'm also a big summer kid because I love summer more than anything! It's just so lively and you can do and experience so many things. Whether a day at the lake, in the garden, on the beach or an evening with friends around the campfire with an unbelievable starry sky above you. But I also love Christmas, the festival of all festivals, where you get such a pleasant feeling like on no other day of the year. You are surrounded by love, anticipation and family, and it feels downright magical. When the gifts are placed under the glowing Christmas tree, the fairy lights glow in their warm light and everything is just so beautiful. By the way... am I the only person who is always so fascinated by the sky?! I mean ... day or night, it's just always so magical. When it is deep blue and black and the stars light up like small crystals or in the morning and evening when it is sunrise and sunset. How the sunbeames are sinking into a lot of red, orange and pink colors and everything blurs like a spilled paint bucket on the sky. In between are the purple glowing clouds. And slowly the sky turns into a starry sky. Even if it’s just deep gray, there is something mystical about it. But there are also days when the sky is so bright-gray, as if the clouds are only very thin, so i always get rainforest-vibes. Wow-that was a lot about the sky xD But what do you think? ;3 I know I'm crazy, but maybe you are too ';D

hi- quick question since I know you're someone who's written several papers- Do you know if you/other people who have written scientific papers are okay with emails about questions about those papers?
I'm someone who studies hyenas- amateurishly -and papers about extinct species of hyenas are really interesting to me but I can't exactly digest them very well because I don't understand the words being used. Like, what in heavens names is a 'metaconid' what does this mean!!!!!
In general authors are happy to receive such questions, but might not have enough time to give you the answer you are looking for. Still, always worth reaching out.
A metaconid is a part of a molar. But I understand this is just an example among of the general issue you are trying to illustrate. What I have learned from years of reading unfamiliar jargon, and listening to podcasts like The Tetrapod Zoology Podcast that use jargon with reckless abandon, is that in general either (a) the words that are encoded in jargon aren't *that* important to understand the grand themes of what is being discussed, or (b) their meaning can be deduced based on context cues. When I come across one that is key but really cannot be deduced, I will google it, and often Wiktionary or similar will have an answer.
The more you read, the more familiar you will get with the jargon, and the less you will need to google or ask. So, I encourage you to read broadly, and chase those interests!
BRAINLESS BOX JELLIES CAN LEARN BY EXPERIENCE
Mangrove box jellyfish (Tripedalia cystophora) is a small species of box jellyfish, native to the Caribbean Sea and the Central Indo-Pacific, presenting a simple nervous system. But despite tiny, researchers have demonstrated present the ability to learn by association. Although has no central brain, and being the size of the finger-tip, this box jelly can be trained to associate the sensation of bumping into something with a visual cue, and to use the information to avoid future collisions.
In the wild, the Mangrove box jellyfish forage for tiny crustaceans between the roots of mangroves. To mimic this environment, researchers placed the box jellies in cylindrical tanks that had either black and white or grey and white vertical stripes on the walls. To the jellyfish, the dark stripes looked like mangrove roots in either clear or murky water. In the ‘murky water’ tanks, the jellyfish bumped into the wall because their visual system couldn’t detect the grey stripes very clearly. But after a few minutes, they learnt to adjust their behaviour, pulsing rapidly to swim away from the wall when they got too close, this state learning is based on the combination of visual and mechanical stimuli in simple animals with no brain.
The learning process, in difference with vertebrate animals, doesnt occurs in a central neuronal organs, but instead in a small organs named rhopalial nervous system, which act as learning center, in which the jelly combines visual and mechanical stimuli during operant conditioning.

You won't fix them, but you can sure seduce them. ;)
