Find your tribe in a Sea of Creativity
I think the reason people are using dreamworks to hate on Disney is because Dreamworks relies on more of a fantasy element where there's magic and fairies and it's all set in the past or in a magic land where everything's interesting whereas Disney relies on pixar and Marvel to make shitty movies that all have the same character tropes and the same morals that are all set in the modern world or the future
Dreamworks can acknowledge that people don't really like the present because of the whole screen addiction thing so they stick to a timeline and a theme where screens are rarely and sometimes never necessary while Disney likes to focus on being inclusive so they modernise all their stories.
Also Dreamworks is more open to experimental work and the animators have more creative freedom to draw things in different styles or give the characters different features and personalities and details and little mannerisms and habits (Take Hiccup for example: handicapped, left handed, talks with his hands alot, adventurous, smart but stupid about it, very peaceful) while all Disney's characters are hollow and a sort if copy and paste theme.
Dreamworks takes more risks to put out movies with plots and characters that no ones ever seen before while Disney just takes stories they've already done, changes up the characters a little bit and them adds a message about generational trauma.
This leads to my rant about how much I hate httyd 3.
The soundtrack was too melodramatic. And the visuals were all bright and colourful to get the attention of 2 year olds. The light fury design was pathetic. The only reason the light fury exists is to be Toothless's girlfriend. Then they went against everything they'd worked for within the first 2 movies. In the first 2 it was all about how Hiccup and Toothless are bestfriends and stick together no matter what. That was even the moral in the 2 shows, first Christmas special and one of the short spin off films. But the third movie went against all of that and made them separate. It ruined the trilogy! The second movie however. The soundtrack fit perfectly for each scene and the colour scheme was perfect. In the scenes where Hiccup discovered his mother and the bewilderbeast nest the colours are appropriate and bright while not bombarding the screen with flashing lights and colours while the scenes featuring Drago had a more dark and sinister colour scheme, as well as the music becoming more heavy and ominous. Where as in the hidden world the colour scheme always had bright colours which made it feel less dark and scary. They modernised the Viking age so that it would be more appealing to younger generations. But the thing about the how to train your dragon fan base is that it mostly consists of people aged 12-27.
Yet another reason to hate the hidden world
In the second movie Valka had eyebags and wrinkles. In the third she looked like a Victoria's secret model
THATS NOT THE SAME PERSON
Oh and I put this in a previous post, but this little interaction is actually the first time I drew a concept from the au
She's coming to see him at night, and gets concerned when she sees him asleep and without his prosthetic (nor did she understand it was a prosthetic, that's probably pretty bizarre to a dragon outside of Berk's little flock) and doesn't realize that no, he didn't get hurt since you last saw him :(
So then I imagine Toothless is kinda like, "Oh! Oh no, I'm fine, see! I just need a little help to fly higher!" and I managed to make myself cry over dragon romance while making this I'm done for.
So I've got this httyd au idea that I've been sitting on for awhile now, I guess it could be considered as a rewrite or something but I don't see it that way. Anyway here's some ideas for my Colourful Nights AU, I'm still working out the factors so it's not the best.
There's going to be more of my thoughts under the cut (aka the usual Hauntley rambling)
First and foremost, the idea to give Grimmel a night fury comes from this post on reddit
Before seeing this I had 100% planned to just... Not have Grimmel exist in the Colourful Nights au? I kind of hate his whole- thing?
I had the idea of Grimmel seeing what Drago did and deciding that where the man failed was not in trying to control dragons, but instead that he didn't try to control powerful dragons specifically. I know that Toothless is supposed to be an endling, but I think the idea of Grimmel slowly building his own dragon army but with dragons he considers powerful and having a few night furies is cool so. Maybe he kept a couple of night furies back during the mass fury hunts, because having them bend to his will makes him feel powerful? Or maybe he only had one. I'm not sure if I'll even keep it but I like the idea.
For my light fury design (I call her Clearscales), I liked the idea of her being a night fury with some sort of genetic mutation, and I'm not sure if I want to keep the disappearing act or not? I like it but I don't know if it would still work if I gave her darker scales, but also! Would I be able to call her Clearscales still? :( That's a very important part, because I've gotten attached to the name.
I also had an idea that relates back to a fact about the Dramillion titan in rtte, it has the ability to camouflage itself like a changewing because they're distantly related, implying that titans have access to traits the normal members of their species don't have.
So what if Toothless' lightning isn't an inherent night fury skill, but instead a trait of night fury titans? Maybe it's due to a possible distant relation with skrills? I always liked the idea that the "lightning" part of "Offspring of lightning and death" was because their blasts look somewhat like a the result of a lightning strike (at least in the 1st movie), but maybe it's also because a titan was witnessed doing this, and because the second and third movies imply that after the first transformation, the titans don't look any different from the normal members, people just assumed that it was something they could all do, and ontop of everything else, it led to a mass panic and hunt?
I'm all over the place and am in no way coherent, but that's my dumb little idea, if you're reading this I can't believe you actually read what I wrote, or scrolled down through it at least. Thank you :)
