Day 5: Headcanon

Day 5: Headcanon

Finally, day 5 of the Jervis Tetch appreciation week! No time wastin’, lets go:

My headcanons for this character mostly build up on his Batman the Animated Series originating backstory. Its honestly the best for his character, though I believe it can minorly improved.

Backstory:

I see him starting out as a gentle minded spirit with a definite interest in the human mind and an, at first, unrecognized desire to control, coming from his not very demanding, insertive nature. Being a socially awkward introvert, he’s very lonely, but when the woman he has a crush on broke up with her boyfriend, he actually tried to impress her, not with his mind controlling devices however. As to be a little braver in his approach, he took on a persona from the many books he reads that he emphasizes with most, the Mad Hatter. It goes decent(I bet he can be adorkable in a way), but she still ends up getting back together with her boyfriend. Jervis by that point started to lose himself more and more into his own fantasy, something he already liked to do to escape his lonely existence through literature. Which is when the darker side of his personality he had kept dormant for so long takes over. With Jervis Tetch stuck only half aware in his own imagination, he ends up putting his earliest functional mind control device on his beloved, managing to avoid suspicion for a long time due to his not very outgoing nature. Wether his beloved Alice survived the encounter is uncertain, but its likely that if she survived, the device Jervis had used on her left her brain short circuited and her in a vegative state.

His villainous behavior and other details:

I overall like to think the Mad Hatter isn’t a villain like the Joker is, more easily able to disappear in crowds, despite distinctive facial features, and generally having not that many big schemes including the harm of several people. He prefers to stay undetected and further improve his devices, so he wont have to constantly tell his victims what to do or be permanently brain damaged, as for changing the size, control range and battery life of his devices. He’s the scariest when thinking of him constantly changing estate and the general lack of certainty of who and who isn’t under his control at any time. Any time, once he becomes the Mad Hatter, anyone in Gotham could suddenly start crying, happy to finally be free to act on their own again or be given a permanent mental illness, like say Alien Hand Syndrome, just because they were once under the Hatters control. And while his devices can influence ones senses and motor functions, they don’t change reality like as seen in the Arkham games(Like seriously, that stuff looks great and all, but how does it work within reality?).

Jervis himself:

As already mentioned, Jervis is stuck only half aware of reality. If he was to be snapped back to reality, he would have a breakdown most likely. He’s also pretty unstable within his imagination, because of the many thoughts criss crossing through his mind at any time. This can cause mood swings, some of which can get violent. Otherwise, he remains on the more polite and oblivious side of character. He also tends to make literature references, more than just Alice in Wonderland(’cause seriously, this guy could use some variety). I imagine he calls anyone of the other Rogues by some literature name and treats them as whatever character he assigns them. Which can be hilarious, given that he downtalks Scarecrow because he thinks Scarecrow is the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz or calls either Joker, Harley or both by either Pennywise or IT. Likely still provides some help to other villains if they manage to find him and use the right words.

Anyways, I believe that’s it… If not, I’ll do more.

But for now, this is my contribution to day 5 of the Jervis Tetch Appreciation Week of 2018.

Y’all have a frabious day as always~

ok but I hate Alice in wonderland in general especially when you realize we would have rightly called Lewis Carroll a pedophile if he was alive today, he wanted to marry the Alice he named his character after when she was 10 years old and her parents whisked her the fuck away and from what I remember he made a business out of photographing naked children. From what I remember the book primarily sold cause people liked the illustrations in it

Okay so I’ve done some research into this and I have found that this whole topic is massively controversial in the literary world.

I found a very interesting article written by the Smithsonian that I recommend you read all the way through because it has arguments and evidence for and against these claims:https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/lewis-carrolls-shifting-reputation-9432378/

Because while Caroll was an avid photographer and there has been some photographs of naked children found his collection there is also an important point to be made about the change in sensibilities between Victorian culture and our current one:

“Of the approximately 3,000 photographs Dodgson made in his life, just over half are of children—30 of whom are depicted nude or semi-nude. Some of his portraits—even those in which the model is clothed—might shock 2010 sensibilities, but by Victorian standards they were…well, rather conventional. Photographs of nude children sometimes appeared on postcards or birthday cards, and nude portraits—skillfully done—were praised as art studies, as they were in the work of Dodgson’s contemporary Julia Margaret Cameron. Victorians saw childhood as a state of grace; even nude photographs of children were considered pictures of innocence itself. In discussing the possibility of photographing one 8-year-old girl unclothed, Dodgson wrote to her mother: “It is a chance not to be lost, to get a few good attitudes of Annie’s lovely form and face, as by next year she may (though I much hope won’t) fancy herself too old to be a ‘daughter of Eve.’ Likewise, Dodgson secured the Liddells’ permission before taking his now-famous portrait of Alice at age 6, posing as a beggar child in a tattered off-the-shoulder dress; the family kept a hand-colored copy of it in a morocco leather-and-velvet case.”

And this goes for every other piece of evidence against Caroll (Dodgson). The only solid possibility was that he was interested in the oldest daughter Lorina (‘Ina’) but there is also evidence to say that he was actually trying to court their nanny. While people say the fact that he was a bachelor all his life was suspicious, there are numerous letters and diary entries that point out that he was involved with quite a few women but sought to hide it because it would have been seen as immoral out of wedlock or courtship.

By the way, the only person to claim he was ‘in love’ with Alice was a family descendent who’s claims are basically but opinion and aren’t backed up by hard fact. It is very easy to jump to conclusions out of the context of the society they lived in compared to ours.

Also by the way: The entire story of Alice In Wonderland was told to some of the children on a boat ride and it was Alice herself who asked him to write it down. It was literally just a story he told them to entertain them with the main character called Alice because that’s kind of what adults do when they’re making up a story for a child? Also they didn’t whisk Alice ‘the fuck away’ he was the one to actually leave (for unknown reasons possibly related to the mother not approving of his courting the eldest legal daughter or his courtship of the nanny. Either way, he was the one to leave not them forcing him away. And regardless he came back to give Alice a copy of the novel.)

Basically all the ‘evidence’ is massively contentious and even if it were the case that he was, the story of Alice In Wonderland isn’t actually linked very much into the personal life of the author so it is very easy to read the book without even having to think about him or his intentions (Especially considering it was written in 1865 and it has long passed into public domain.)

I implore you to read to article in full and come to your own conclusion (and please don’t read any articles from The Daily Mail as it’s not worth the paper it’s written on) because making a snap statement of ‘Lewis Caroll was totally a paedophile’ isn’t something you should do before looking at all the facts.

Day 3 headcanon

Sweet headcanon day!

• As stated yesterday I say he wears tap dancing shoes and of course knows how to dance.

• He's half french on his mother's side.

• Wanted to be a cook before his "talent" manifested.

• He wants to be friends with a lot of the rogues, but comes off as pushy and way to touchy.

• He's afraid of silence and being forgotten.

• This has lead him to be terrified of EVER losing his voice

• He likes to have great hygiene.

• Pansexual

• Mostly gets along with the other theatre rogues

~This next one is for my dearest friends, and part of the "Horsewoman gals" of the music man~

• He wanted to call the horsewomen the "Sirens" but sadly it was already taken.

• Adding to that, he jokingly called them his harpies, but that name was also quickly thrown out and so was muses oddly enough. Eventually though they came up with the 'proper' name

Arkham Asylum and its medical practices p1

What practice:

Electrotherapy (ETC) is actually used to treat severe depression, sucidal thoughts/behaviors, bipolar (mania/depression), and schizophrenia (Catonia). This treatment is also sometimes used in Dementia and pregnancy. This is usually used when medication doesn't work, the patient has had ETC before, or the sufferer needs the effects immediately because they can pose a threat (to self or others) in the time it takes the medication to take effect. This is all done with consent of the patient and possibly family.

Usually the patient is given muscle relaxers and asleep (anesthetic) before hand. While they sleep the device is placed on their head and a controlled electric current is used producing a brief brain seizure. The patient usually doesn't remember the producer and is carefully monitored and is repeated three times a week.

Side effects: Temporary confusion, retrograde amnesia, temporary nausea, headache, muscle ache and medical complications.

(www.webmd.com, www.mayoclinic.org, www.mind.org.uk)

How Arkham Asylum is shown using it:

If you've seen/read whatever anything with Arkham Asylum or the inmates chances are this treatment has been show or referenced. This makes sense as ETC is still used today and I'd be lying if I said that none of the inmates need it. However personally I don't think it's shown/done correctly.

The staff apparently missed the part about the patients being asleep during the procedure as patients laughing (Joker) seem to be a common occurrence. Also how Sparks seem to fly while it's happening when that would probably kill or at least fry the brain. Another thing is how the patients are strapped down, something I didn't mention was that the Patient is LAYING DOWN not sitting in a freaking chair!

Arguably Arkham may not even ask the patients for consent (which kinda makes sense it'd be weird to just have a page of a comic having an inmate sign paperwork). Another thing is which rogues get the treatment I'm no doctor/psychologist/ therapist whatever so I can't say if a certain rogue needs it or not.

If I'm seeing this correctly then it makes a lot of sense so many inmates are not getting better and are always eager to escape. Hell I bet Bruce Wayne and Batman have quite a few things to say to the staff at Arkham.

To add:

Sadly whenever it's shown in the Batman universe it looks like it simply feeds into the public opinion of ETC which is a shame because even though it was horrific in the past it's helped so many people today.

At the end all I wanna add is PLEASE do research into this stuff creators you don't need to know everything about but a quick Google search reveals it's not that horrific, at least today! If y'all would like me to discuss another treatment in Arkham please let me know!

Day 4 Relationships

If I’m not careful this could be controversial (jk) I’m just going to pick people Tetch is normally associated with and give a brief description of how I see them

1: Jonathan Crane - Friend

Jonathan and Jervis (once called the J.js’- bad move Joker) they’ve had a rather close relationship grow originally Jonathan was one of Tetches tormentors in Arkham, but that eventually changed when the two worked together. Know you’ll find them sitting across from each other in the corner of a room chitchating. I have no problem with the ship and it’s nice as a scroll through Tumblr.

2: Edward Ngyma - Mutual/kinda friend

Mutual, they’re not the closet to be called friends (as differing interests stop them) but they’re not enemies either (similar feelings about school) and can be seen sitting together or standing near each other from time to time. If Tetch needs information/ or just feels like listening to someone talk Edwards usually his person. I’ve seen them as friends, couple, and enemies so I’m kinda just nuetral to it all. (Gotta say I feel almost guilty for putting the dorksquad way less close than before)

3: Pamala Isley - Stay away

Ivy and Tetch got of to a REALLY bad start. Tetches kidnapping of females really pissed Ivy of at the start, so much they normally didn’t stay in the same room. However over time Ivy has definitely reconsidered her stance considering all of the other rogues and DOES want to try and talk to him again. Sadly at this point Jervis would rather avoid her. (I REALLY like the SpringMadness ship, but I feel like it’ll take a long time to happen, just like a tree)

4: Mary dale - “Hey Jerv” “Hey Mary”

They have tea parties together, talk together and help each other with there Maladaptive daydreaming. All in all they have a positive relationship, the doctors normally don’t mind but they do worry about each other encouraging the others delusions. They were close only after a week of knowing each other.

5: Lyle Bolton - eeeeeh welllllll no

It’s hard to say anyones close to Bolton especially after the “Lock up” incident. Tetch is completely terrified of Bolton, while Bolton just finds Tetch exhausting. In a Bolton reformed au I see them tolerating each other if not avoiding each other. (On occasion Bolton has helped Tetch out of trouble.)

6: Alice Pleasance - No

Alice at first say Tetch as a friend later fear, then completely loath and finally someone to no longer care or think about, she’s either happily married or single. Tetch is sad at the least about all this.

7: Madeline Daresbury - OC

Yes, I’m putting my own OC on here! Madeline and Tetch are two peas in a pod if not, a dependant on the other. Madeline happily goes along with all of Tetches delusions and Tetch enjoys her company (he doesn’t know that Madeline is also using him as a surrogate for her little brother). The two are normally not in Arkham together (Madeline goes to Black gate) but can be usually be spotted together outside of Arkham.Whered The Mad Hatter be without his March Hare?

If you have any questions or other stuff about my character relationships please let me know!

“You’re the last person I wanted to see right now.”

"I'm so very sorry to disappoint you Shaw sir, but I must give you tragic news of your chauffeur!

You see he was driving here as it were,

when Magneto came and caused quite a stir. He grabbed the car and well,

to put it lightly, an accident did occur. "

The hare gave Shaw a sympathetic look, knowing full well he was more annoyed then any thing.

"I felt it was only right to tell you so you didn't think ill of him, when his fate was already so grim."
