Battinson

Gordon: You've got a little *gestures toward his eye* little something there, man.

Bruce, lurking in the corner of Gordon's office:

Gordon: You know, I've got allergies too. I've been taking Algersil; it works pretty well

Bruce: *mumbles*

Gordon: My eyes water like crazy in the spring, is all I'm saying.

Bruce, leaning in uncomfortably close: What do you mean?

Gordon, taking a deep breath, aware that his Bat friend needs things worded in a certain way: I'm talking about your allergies. Your eyes are always watering.

Bruce:

Bruce: I don't have allergies.

Gordon: Oh? Okay. I was just...maybe the eye makeup makes them water? Or...?

Gordon: You're-

Gordon: I mean, you're not crying all the time, right? *chuckles*

Battinson meeting Superman, because if anyone needs a sunshine alien it’s him.

Bruce, in full Batman mode, tracks Superman down and eventually finds him on a rooftop in Metropolis. He grapples up, perches himself on an A/C unit, and stares.

Clark, new to the Superman thing, just trying to enjoy a burger and fries after helping with a house fire: Um. Hi?

Bruce:

Clark: I’ve noticed you following me? You’re from Gotham. The Batman.

Bruce: *shines a flashlight at Clark’s food*

Clark: Yeah. It’s a cheeseburger and curly fries. Did you want some or…? Do you need help? Seems like you maybe need some help.

Bruce: *shines the light in Clark’s eyes*

Clark: Do you want to, um, talk or something?

Bruce: what are you

Clark: I’m Superman! :)

Bruce: alien?

Clark: How did you—

Bruce: I am a bat.

Clark: O-kay. So do you want to be friends or…?

Bruce:…

Clark: :)

Bruce: *launches himself off the side of the building*

Alfred: Good morning Bruce, how was patrol?

Bruce, rewatching the conversation with Clark on his computer: i think i made a friend today Alfred

believe it or not, the concepts “the representation in rick riordan’s books is often incredibly lacking and even problematic at times” and “despite that, he still wrote representation when no one else was doing it and it appears to have been a sincere effort on his part” can both be true. yes, there are major issues with some characters and their writing like nico and samirah. but it seems to have been a genuine effort that just wasn’t researched enough. idk i didn’t explain it well enough but i hope the point got across.

I physically NEED Pattison's Bruce to be the mainstream batman that gets Dick. I wanna see this gremlin of a human being who absolutely only showers when his pseudo dad/butler tells him to and would rather sink into the ground than be perceived by another human being, to get confronted head first by Dick Grayson Extrovert Extraordinary. I wanna watch his grimy emo brain twist and melt between his fondness/love for the kid he scooped up from the streets and the fact Dick is a concentrated energy ball who demands to be taken outside (yes, in the sun, B, you need vitamins too) everyday and wants To Talk All The Time And Will Not Accept Grunting As An Acceptable Answer.

I'm begging plz

Take my money but give me this

Okay, i know we are talking a lot about Battinson getting Dick, but imagine his characterization past that, when Jason dies. I wouldn't be surprised if he turned inward and got suicidal. This is the Batman that is truly dark and unhinged. Batman would be the only thing keeping Bruce alive, but he is always consumed by grief and regret. This would be a man who lost a child, not a vigilante who lost a sidekick. He would be broken in a way he never could have thought.

You speak with parents who have lost kids and they are never the same. This is a new Batman, a new Bruce. He is ruthless as his hope is now gone. Eventually he mends some of the cracks and learns to live with the grief. He moves forward, but never quite moves on. Then imagine Red Hood showing up.

This Batman would break down at the return of his child. He would never fight him or choose the Joker over Jason. This is a man who would see his tiny child all grown up and feel both immense happiness and elation and again, break in a new way. How could he go on knowing the hurt he caused Jason. This is a man who wants nothing more than to heal and help, who's core personality is based around kindness. How could he not choose love. The love of a father to a son. This Batman would do right by Jason, not by killing the joker, but by beginning to heal himself so he can help Jason feel better. He will strive to fix what was broken. He would becomes Jason's hope. He would choose healing.

This is a man who will break over and over, each in a new and more unimaginable way, yet everytime, he is showing his strength by choosing hope. He chooses to be better. He chooses love.

Fanon Nico:

A uwu shy and timid introvert who can't speak and hates everyone

Canon Nico:

A protective, confident, stubborn, fiery, heroic, confrontational extrovert by nature.

Un-strusting, resenteful and remorseful by traumas (but now he's getting better).

Stoic as a survival skill.

Kind, not aggressive but quick-to-anger.

Never shy or timid...just a little awkward around Will at first (pretty common to act awkward around the person we like)

"And you just went with that?"

The fandom took the whole darkness and sunshine, opposites attract thing too seriously and fucked up the characters, nico is the darkness and will's got to be sunshine.

In order for them to fit in this concept, the fandom just fucked up their entire personalities so badly, cut it to pieces and threw it in the sewer

so nico is this loner depressed helpless guy who hates everyone and will is the super bubbly sunshine and rainbows always happy-go-lucky soft bean who has no personality other than being an emotional support health nut bossy himbo boyfriend, who is soo helpless he can't even defend himself and is always forcing nico to stay in the infirmary and "taking care of him"( read it as always forbidding him from using his powers and getting mad when he does, eating anything other than green salads, and being borderline controlling and toxic)

like c'mon!! Will is a badass character who had to grow up quickly and had to take on soo many responsibilities at such a young age, watch his siblings die, risk life at battle and save others!! He's a traumatized child! and so is nico! Will didnt go through all that only for you guys to completely reduce him to a soft boi™️ and baby him like idk why the fandom has come to the conclusion that he can't fight!?

Ofcourse he's not the fighter type, but he's a combat medic!! If you are going to heal ppl in a fucking war you must know how to defend yourself and fight in a battle cuz this ain't a mortal battle between two countries!, the monsters ain't gonna follow the Geneva conventions!! He has also been seen with a knife/dagger and a bow and arrow in the books.

Also why do people think he doesn't know any other emotions other than happiness? (And if he isn't happy he is worried about every single thing 24/7 there's no inbetween)

Yeah he bottles up his emotions because as a leader he shouldn't show his flaws(this is canon) but my boy is quick to anger like most of the scenes he's been in so far, he's either mad or stressed, did yall forget the time when annabeth broke the chariot?? My man was so close to punching something

I still remember that time a year and a half ago when I read this fic where will was talking to nico and tried to roll his eyes since he was annoyed at nico but nico found It hilarious since will was having a had time doing that and looked wierd doing it since he's too nice and never gets mad at anything....yeah this was legit there in that fic idk the exact lines, just paraphrased it..

Anyway my point is the fandom fucked the entire canon personalities just to fit in this mold

Obsessed with how shy Bruce was. He was so introverted and awkward. He comes across so confident when he’s in the suit but immediately when he’s out of it he seems like he just wants to sink through the floor when talking with people. Every time he had to make eye contact it looked like it caused him physical pain. Incredible

Batman, over the phone: You uhh… You guys still there? Red Hood/Jason: Yeah no, we’re still here ummm can…Can you run that back again? There’s, there’s no way that we heard that right. Batman/Bruce: I want you to stay on the lookout for Skeletor. Red Hood: All right, ok, so we did, we did hear that right it was just fucking dumb. Nightwing/Dick: Bruce I think you might need to clarify more cause that seems like you’re just saying that as a turn of phrase. Are we hunting for Doctor Destiny or what? Batman: Listen this is all I know, you’re looking for a large man with a skull for a head, in a suit that is covered in bones, who is wearing a cape, with a voice that sounds like two chalkboards trying to kill each other. Red Hood: Ok, that does sound a lot like Skeletor. Nightwing: Does he have like a name of any kind or does he literally go by Skeletor? Batman: Alright so there’s the thing, I’m gonna be honest with you Dick, I got so annoyed at his voice that I started blocking things out. I don’t remember exactly what his name was, it was Lord Something-or-Other I don’t… Robin/Damian: Lord Death Man. Batman: Wait hold on a second, what? Robin: The guy, his name is Lord Death Man. Batman: Oh, sweet. Good Job. How did you remember that? Robin: He’s my girlfriend’s boss. Batman: Oh ok cool… WHAT?! Nightwing: Bruce? Bruce you there? Bruuucccee? Red Hood: Dick? Nightwing: BRUCE! And I think he hung up on us. We need to teach him how to hangup the phone like a proper human being. Red Hood: Dick. Nightwing: Like he’s been hanging up the phone like he’s in a movie since I was a god damn Robin. I mean you’d think living in a house with the most polite person on the planet he’d learn to hang up the phone like a normal human being… Red Hood: DICK!   Nightwing: What! Red Hood, nodding his head towards something off screen. Nightwing: What are you looking at? *camera pans to Lord Death Man crouched behind an object, ineffectuality attempting to hide* Nightwing, whispering: What the fuck is he doing? Red Hood, whispering back: I think he thinks we can’t see him. Nightwing, still semi-whispering: He’s just crouching there. He’s not even hiding that well. Why would we not be able to see him? Red Hood: Hey! LDM, looks around. Red Hood: Yeah you. Buddy! LDM, stands slowly: Yes? Red Hood: You Skeletor? LDM: N..no. Red Hood: Okay. Who, uhh… Who are you then? LDM: L..Larry. Red Hood, quietly to Nightwing: This motherfucker just say Larry? Nightwing: What’s your uhh… What’s your deal man? LDM: I am to be Batman’s nNemisis for I can not DIE! *Red Hood immediately shoots LDM in the head* Nightwing: HOLY SHIT JASON WHAT THE FUCK MAN? Red Hood, casually: What, you heard him. He said he couldn’t die. Nightwing: And you just took him on his word for that!? Red Hood: Dude’s dressed as skeletons usually only have one type of power, come on. Nightwing: He better start fucking breathing. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Come on, come on. LDM: *gasps back to life* Nightwing: Oh thank fuck! LDM: You SHOT ME! Red Hood: Oh my god your voice somehow got worse. Nightwing: Hey Jack Skellington, you still all there? LDM:  I still have all my memories, yes. Like all the Pokemon and their evolutions. *Red Hood shoots LDM in the head again* Nightwing: JASON WILL YOU CUT THAT OUT! Why did you even do that?! Red Hood, deadpan at the camera: I absolutely hate forced reference jokes because they are extremely lazy and they piss me the fuck off. Nightwing, quietly as an aside: I wouldn’t do that. People got real mad when Batman did that last time. Red Hood: I’m wearing a beanie and he’s in shorts. What the fuck do you want me to do? Nightwing: Alright that’s a fair point. LDM, wheezing back to life: I thought it was funny. *Red Hood instantly shoots him again* Nightwing: DUDE! Red Hood: Alright, I’m done.

Bruce gets a laser pointer

Dick: Bruce, have you seen my phone?

Bruce: *pulls a laser pointer out of his belt and shines it across the room at Dick’s phone*

Dick: Great. I’m sure this new toy won’t be annoying at all.

Steph: Do we have any Swiss cheese?

Bruce: *aims his laser pointer at the fridge*

Steph: Wow, Dick wasn’t kidding. That is really annoying.

Jason: Hey Brucille, have you seen my Wonder Woman hoodie? It went missing.

Bruce: *aims laser pointer at Tim*

Jason: Oh you’re in for it now you little geek.

Tim: Bruce whY—

Hal: Hey Spooky, you’re late to the meeting. What the hell have you been doing?

Bruce: *points laser at Clark*

Clark, embarrassed and irritated after putting up with this shit for almost a month: *blasts the laser pointer with his laser eyes*

Hal: LOL. What now, Bat?

Bruce: hn.

Bruce: *pulls two more laser pointers out of his belt, places one on the table, and shines the other one at it*

Diana: Can we please start the meeting—

Anyways saw jason being brought into a titans post recently because it seems fandom has this idea that Dick didn't mourn Jason/didn't care about him/whatever.

So anyways. Let's talk about post-crisis because that's the standard when ppl bring up Robin!Jason.

Fanon myth #1: When Dick mourns Jason, he's grieving someone he didn't know.

Canon: Post-crisis didn't have a ton of time to establish the new version of Jason's character, but they dedicated a whole issue to Dick reacting to Jason being Robin, had Jason show up in The New Titans, and frankly set things up so that their relationship was pretty much unchanged from pre-crisis (which was a good relationship).

The issue I just mentioned has Dick start out as annoyed in the beginning because Bruce didn't tell him there was a new Robin and Jason messed up a case he was stalking out. He's a bit harsh with Jason at first, but it's not meant to be something unforgivably mean - it's understandable. By the end of the issue they've given each other like 3 nicknames a piece (shorty, old-timer, kid, Mr. Nightwing, Mr. Robin, etc) and end by bonding over kicking the crud out of some dudes. It takes Dick all of one day to warm up to Jason lmfao, he's mildly harsh on day 1 and day 2 he gives Jason his old costume and contact information and it ends like this:

A series of three comic book panels. The first has Jason and Dick standing over a pile of guys on the ground. A narration box says "120 seconds later." Dick: "Not bad for a beginner, kid. But you could use some practice on that sidekick." Jason: "Duly noted, old-timer. I'll work on it." The two smile at each other and shake hands, you can see Bruce's outline up above. Narration: "The two of them are flush with the thrill of their well-earned victory. They don't think to look up. So they don't see me." The final panel shows a close up of Bruce's face in the Batman cowl. His face is set in a proud smile. Bruce: "But even if they did, they're too far away to see me smile. Thanks, Dick."

Batman (1940) #416

Now if that's the only issue you read, I too would be a bit skeptical, like "oh he showed up one time, everyone knows he had to at least pretend to try" and if you're reading through a reading list for Robin!Jason and are uninterested in Dick, you'll miss this next thing.

This is Danny Chase, a member of the Titans. He's searching for reserve members of the Titans because he's bored as he got left home alone when the Titans went to space without him.

A series of panels showing. First is Jason Todd's face on a screen with the words "Robin-2" and below that "Status:". In the next panel it shows those words repeated at the top and then Danny's surprised face, his glasses reflecting the screen. Danny: "Huh?" At the bottom of the screen it says "Robin-2" then "Status:" then "Unknown" with each word on a different line. Finally, Danny looks up saying "'Unknown?' I don't get it. I spoke to the Toddster last week? What could have--"

The New Titans #52

Remember that there wasn't a ton of time for them to set up Jason's new characterization, but in universe, he still was Robin for about 3 years. In pre-crisis times, Jason did appear in the New Teen Titans, most notably helping save Dick and Raven from Brother Blood. This is something that is implied to be carried over from pre-crisis into post-crisis continuity, as Danny (who wasn't even on that mission) knows about Jason, has a nickname for Jason, and talked to him the week before he died - ergo the Titans, including Dick stayed in contact with Jason after that mission.

So yes, even in that tiny sliver of time that we got post-crisis Jason, the writers went out of their way to establish Dick and Jason's relationship. They couldn't do it more because it was literally like. A year.

Fanon myth #2: Dick didn't mourn Jason.

Canon: This likely comes from Dick being pretty much okay by the time A Lonely Place of Dying comes around. That's Bruce's arc, but that doesn't mean that Dick didn't have one - he, literally did.

In my expert opinion, he looks pretty upset about Jason dying here... and this is his initial reaction, not retconned or anything - this is a direct response to "A Death in the Family". Basically Danny goes "hey i think Jason died" and it sets off this chain of events

A series of comic book panels. Dick limps away from Kory, one hand reaching back as if pushing her away. His left leg is wrapped in bandages and his costume is torn up, and he's using a crutch. Danny stands behind him with his palms facing up, explaining. Raven is in the doorway saying "You must be mistaken." Kory: "Dick, where are you going?" Dick: "I've got to find out." Danny: "I've tried calling Wayne's place, but nobody ever answers." The next panel has Dick sits at the Titans computer with Danny, Kory, Joey, and Raven looking on. Dick: "I've linked the Titans computer into Bruce's computer in the Batcave. I can access any information that's in there." Danny: "I know. That's how I found out." Dick looks desperately at the screen as Kory looks at him in concern. Kory: "Dick, calm down. There could be a mistake." Dick: "If there is, then I'll take it easy. Oh lord -- Jason!" The next panel has Jason's profile on the screen. Danny: "See -- it says whereabout unknown. No info. That doesn't make any sense." Dick: "Shut up, Danny. I can use Bruce's password to bypass this main screen." The next panel shows the following computer readout: "HT: 5'4, Deceased, of death, of death" with commas representing line breaks. Dick clenches his fists to the sides of his head and tears drip from eyes squeezed shut and he screams "No! No!! Nooooo!!" with the second "No" bolded and the third one written in red bubble letters. The dialogue bubble has jagged edges. The next panel has Joey, Donna, Terry, and Raven all looking upset. Donna: "Jason... dead? My god. How old was he, anyway? How did it happen?" Terry: "I didn't want you to find out this way." Raven: "Richard-- do you need my help?" The next panel has Dick hunched over on the desk with his hands gripping his head. Kory stands over him almost touching his head, and Danny is on the other side. Dick: "No... no! Don't do anything to me, Raven." Danny: "I think it happened a week or two ago. I'm not sure." The next panel shows Danny talking and Kory looking concerned. Danny: "There's been nothing in the papers -- sorta like the secretary disavowing any info and such." Kory: "Danny, maybe this isn't the best time..." The final panel shows Dick crying and gritting his teeth veins popping out of his hand as he holds his head, his eyes are covered in shadows and tears drip off his nose. Danny continues "Hey, we knew the job was dangerous when we took it!"
Dick lunges forward grabbing Danny by the collar of his shirt and smacking him against the computer hard enough to knock off his glasses. Kory stands behind him with her arms up and mouth open in shock. Dick: "You stupid little jerk. God, I can't believe how idiotic you are! I thought it was because you were a kid -- but you're really just plain dumb!" Kory: "Dick--" Danny: "Hey, leggo. Wh-what are you doing?" Kory reaches forward and Donna and Joey rushed forward. Dick stands over Danny, still holding him by his collar. Dick: "No, get back, Kory. I can't keep listening to this moron thinking life's just another statistic. Not when he nearly fell apart when it was his own blood that was spilled." Dick pulls Danny close to his face, scowling at him. Dick: "Listen -- this is real life. Not some Jason Bond spy story where the bad guys get blown away and the good guys always live." Danny: "Lay off, man, before I use my powers." Kory, Donna, and Joey cluster around Dick, who's sweating, still looking down at Danny (off panel). Donna: "Dick... c'mon. Step back."

The New Titans #55

And that's just the initial reaction. Later in the issue, after taking time to think things through, he fires Danny from the team with part of his reasoning being:

"I've been thinking about what happened with Jason and I honestly don't know if we should be taking responsibility for someone as young as you."

From here, chronologically speaking, he visits Jason's grave and expresses guilt over giving Jason his old costume and notes that Bruce didn't even try contacting him about the funeral, which he had missed.

Next we have a not super well known Secret Origins issue where he confronts his feelings about Jason while stuck hallucinating in limbo, and this issue actually acknowledges the incident with Brother Blood and Jason helping out, which confirms it was brought along into the new continuity. Basically these panels sum up the incident.

A series of four panels, the first has Dick waking up. He says "Unngh! Please tell me I'm not still dreaming. Tell me that I'm really here!" The next panel shows his back as he starts to sit up. From left to right Raven, Gar, Joey, Malcom, Karen, Donna, Vic, and Lilith all crowd around his bed. Raven: "We're real, Richard. We're all real. You're home." Kory: "Thank X'Hal." Kory wraps her arms around Dick, standing behind him. Kory: "Oh, Dick... we were all so scared..." Dick: "Kory... man -- it's like seeing you for the first time again. But please -- can someone finally fill me in on what happened?" Raven: "It was the antithesis, Richard. It wanted revenge." Kory and Dick look at Raven. Raven: "Years ago it transformed its servant, Mr. Twister, into the gargoyle to use deceit and psychological assaults against you. He failed. That's when vengeance became an obsession. So they waited-- until your recent emotional turmoil made you vulnerable. The goal was to crush your spirit-- so you wouldn't have the strength to escape. You would beg to remain in limbo. You were already in a drug-induced slumber when we arrived -- and we feared a sudden awakening might prove fatal. There was also Malcom."

Secret Origins Annual (1987) #3

So yeah the "recent emotional turmoil" is Jason dying and Dick's conversation with Bruce (where Bruce blames him for making him need a partner, blames him for Jason's death, punches him in the face while Dick is still injured from the space mission, and kicks him out of the house). And the "drug-induced slumber" is because Dick at some point has started taking sleeping pills, and he feels like shit at the start of the issue and takes one so he can get some rest (which then backfires). Also in this issue, he mentions that he's seeing a therapist (he hallucinates and is like hmm maybe i should call them, before being like, no it's probably fine, I'm just on edge... which rip).

In The New Titans #57, which takes place after this, we see him talking to his therapist, and going to confront Bruce, which now kicks off A Lonely Place of Dying with him in a better place now that he's had some time to talk things out with his therapist and such.

However he still doesn't like bringing up Jason

Tim looks over Dick's shoulder. Tim: "How about Jason Todd?" Dick: "You don't throw softballs, do you?"

Robin (1993) #0

Here they brought him up for exposition, but let's not forget the time Dick beat the Joker to death because he brought up Jason's name. He thought Tim had been killed by the Joker too, but the clown saying Jason's name sends him over the edge.

Dick stands in front of the Joker who is on the ground. Joker: "Aw... Jeez... I hit Jason a lot harder than that." Close up of Joker's beaten and bloody face. Joker: "His name was Jason, right?" Close up of Dick's face as he grimaces and moves in for a punch. The final panel has Dick sitting on the Joker who flails up and arm and a leg as Dick angrily punches him.

Last Laugh #6

After this he's incredibly upset with himself and locks himself in his apartment and when Wally comes to talk to him he finds him looking at a bunch of old photographs, one of which Dick picks up at the end and stares at, which is labelled "Me and Jason". And further on the grieving ends of things, in Nightwing Secret Files #1 the first story features him hallucinating Jason who leads him through his life story (again exposition time lmfao). And in Gotham Knights #26, when Tim brings up Jason in an argument, Dick looks crushed and Tim just apologizes at that point, because he knows he crossed a line. So yeah. Dick grieved Jason.

Fandom myth #3: No one even cared Jason came back and they were incredibly mean and out of line, especially Dick who threw him in Arkham three doors down from the Joker!!!! Jason was pit mad he deserves none of this mistreatment!!!

Canon: Jason came back right before another crisis, the one Dick was supposed to die in, and actually gloated about Dick dying to Bruce's face, while trying to become a drug lord and trying to force Bruce to kill the Joker. Jason then proceeded after the crisis (which had left Dick in a three week coma - he pretty much didn't have the time/opportunity to respond to Jason being alive right away) to dress up as Nightwing and run around New York City killing criminals and through a bizarre series of events, Dick ends up saving him from being eaten by a tentacle monster and then Jason himself becomes a tentacle monster, and Brothers in Blood is an arc that exists...

Dick is conflicted about Jason coming back considering that Jason is you know, going around murdering criminals as Nightwing. He talks to a therapist but when Jason does ask for help, he does decide to go and save him. So he does well... care, it's just complicated because Jason as Red Hood isn't the Jason Dick remembers.

Jason has actually gone to prison twice. The first time Tim in his infinite wisdom decided now, right after Jason tried to start a gang war where his grand plan was "use the kiddie gangs as fodder" and uniting the gangs under the "good cops", would be the perfect time to give him a second chance.

Now the Arkham thing: when Dick became Batman, he decided to renovate Arkham and get ride of all the torture and shit that was going on, because he had spent some time there undercover and was like, getting tortured fucking sucks.

At this point, Jason, with his second chance decides he's going to use it becoming the "Batman Gotham needs" nearly kills Tim (who literally gets away by playing dead using a bullshit technique to slow his heart rate) and shoots Damian in the chest, and also attacks Dick as well (he's not messing around he literally sprays Dick with fear gas in this fight). He then becomes the Red Hood again and kidnaps Dick and Damian in a ploy to unmask them in front of the internet. The police capture Jason, and Dick pulls some strings to get Jason sent to Arkham - he has to pull strings because Jason doesn't actually belong there

Jason speaking up at Batman. Jason: "I have passed all of my physch exams -- multiple times. I'm simply homicidal. Will I kill again? Sure. Am I a bad person? Oh yeah. So keep me locked up. Just not here."

Batman and Robin (2009) #23

And note: the joker just attacked everyone so like he's not in Arkham, he broke out a while ago. And also note: Jason's sane, he's passed all evaluations, he calls himself sane, he is making these decisions not out of pit madness, but because it's what he wants to do. So, why did they pull strings to put him in Arkham? Simple:

"He won't be safe in a conventional prison... there will be a list of enemies a mile long locked up in there with him. Unless he's in twenty-four-hour protective custody, all he'll be doing is fending off attacks."

- Dick Grayson, Batman and Robin (2009) #23

So yeah. He was in Arkham because Dick cared enough not to let him just die. Their relationship isn't by any means good in this period, but Dick very clearly, still cares.

Dick holds out a hand as Nightwing, Jason staring back up at him. Dick: "The fight is over Jason, take my hand. You have no choice!" Jason grins, blood trickling down his face. Jason: "But I do have a choice." Dick: "Don't do it! You can reform! I'll see to that!" Jason: "What's the matter, Dick? Don't want my blood on your hands? Well, it's too late!" Dick reaches out his hand. Dick: "Take it. Now, Jason. Take my hand!" Jason grins darkly at him. Jason: "I'll be seeing you sooner than you think." Jason falls down towards the water as Dick screams "NOOOOOO!" in bubble red letters. Internally he thinks "It didn't have to end this way." Jason then drops all the way into the water.

Batman: Battle for the Cowl #3

I hope that clears things up. @not-your-regular-nerd, tagging you because you recently seemed to have some confusion about how Dick could grieve other people but not Jason. I'd recommend reading some of the comics I mentioned if you don't think Dick cared about Jason. Him caring about Donna dying is not mutually exclusive to caring about Jason dying.

no way home spoilers

That look in Tobey's eyes when he's holding Tom's Peter back from killing Norman. He didn't have to say a single word. They both just knew. That look is haunting me it won't leave my mind.

It was so, so important how they did that moment - how Tobey didn't just snatch the hoverboard out of Tom's hands with a web - but rather he could look him in the eyes, look his younger self in the eyes, and stop him from making the same choice that he did. Not just physically stop him but to make him understand, and let him make the choice to let go himself, instead of making it for him.

I love how they really framed Tobey's as the oldest and the wisest. He's had all this time to look back on that choice he made. All this time to think about the things he would have done differently. All this time thinking if he had just known, wishing he could just go back in time and talk to himself, to stop himself. He never thought that one day he would actually get that chance.

That look. That look that won't leave my mind. That look that said you know you shouldn't do this. You know May wouldn't want you to do this. I know the pain it will cause you. I've felt it. I feel it every day. I don't want you to go through what I did. I don't want you to make the same mistake I did. I don't want you to feel the pain that I do. Please. I love you. Please. It didn't help.

And Tom's Peter listens. He makes the choice Tobey's couldn't. His younger self didn't have him to offer him his strength and compassion and wisdom and perspective. Tobey's Peter can never go back in time and save himself, but at least he could save this version of himself. He can go on living, and the pain will fade more and more every day. Whenever he looks back on his younger self at least he'll know, without a doubt, that in another world, there's a version of him that he was able to help. Who didn't make that choice.

(And then Tom's Peter could then do something else that Tobey's couldn't, that being curing Norman, which he said he's been thinking about for years. Even though he was dead he still wished he could go back and help him, and now he was finally able to give him a second chance.)

(And the fact that Tobey says in the very next scene after May dies that ever since he got here he's been trying to find Peter because he feels he needs his help. I know he probably got there earlier but part of me thinks he got there right after or when May died, and he goes through the portal a few hours later. Yes Peter needed him because of the villains but the real reason he needed him was because of May's death and how he was grieving - and how this universe's Peter was going to make the same decision he did if he didn't find him and help him.)

And Andrew. I saw someone else say that he's still grieving Gwen, which is so true. From his conversation with Tobey it sounds like he really just sunk himself entirely into his work as Spiderman in order to, maybe not so much cope but just keep himself occupied to block out the grief.

He thinks about her every day. Sees her falling. Feels the weight of her in his arms again and again and again.

And when MJ fell, every fiber of his being was screaming not again. Not again. Not again.

In that moment, he just saw Gwen. Like he does every day. Only this time it was all too real.

And this time it was different. MJ's Peter couldn't get to her, just like he couldn't get to Gwen. This time he was here. This time he could do something about it. This time there was someone who could spare Peter the pain he lives with every moment of his life.

Maybe when he caught her, for just a split second, it felt like he caught Gwen. He had relived the most horrible moment of his life again. That moment that lived in his mind, that was always there underneath everything else, burning just a little but without end. Then somehow, this time, it ended differently.

The worst thing that happened to Andrew's Peter was a tragedy, but the worst thing that happened to Tobey's was a choice. They're both things that they can never change, but wish they could. They're both things they were able to spare this young version of themselves from. This boy who's full of so much potential and been through so much already. This boy who needed them. This boy who is them.

Obviously this whole movie was about second chances and compassion. You can always give second chances to people, no matter what they've done. You can always start over with them. Everyone except for yourself. You will always know what you've been through and what you've done. And you can be compassionate with yourself, but you can never truly start over. We can never get second chances in life - we can only have them in the eyes of others.

I wish I could go back in time and be there for my younger self. I wish I could help them and guide them. I wish I could protect them. I wish I could save them. I think about it all the time. I think a lot of us do. But in the real world we can't save our younger selves from pain.

Tobey and Andrew were able to fulfill the impossible dream of giving yourself a second chance. Of saving yourself.

I think what this movie was saying was that, as much as we wish we could, we can't start over. You can't give second chances to yourself so that's why it's all the more important that you give them to others - because if we could give ourselves even one moment of the past that could be changed, we would all do it in a heartbeat.
