In total agreement of this~
Plenty of pairings and plots I prefer in fanfiction but I still think the canon stuff is OK.
I feel fandom would get along a lot better if there was mutual understanding that liking a character, agreeing with a character, and thinking the character is well constructed/executed are all separate (if often overlapping) positions, each with their separate tastes and subjectivities. Also: character portrayals are intended to make the audience feel things; this is separate from (if often overlapping with) analyzing/appreciating their actions and role in the story.
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K is something like 75% gag with the rest being fluff and serious, and the fanfiction that focuses on the 25% is so fucking visceral.
The negative side effects of Saiki's powers are described with graphic depictions of migraines, nausea and dizziness. The slow, reluctant realization that his friends like him and he likes them is heavy, sad and joyous. Makoto and Kusuke's behavior goes from pathetic to dangerous, with the horror of it written so vividly I have to take a break from reading. The autism and aro/ace vibes, already present and relatable in canon are even stronger.
The difference between canon and fanfiction, wow.
Too cute~
I'm told that Utsumi says in the audio commentary on the BD that there's 61 karuta cards and I found 61, albeit some of them only partial cards lol.... so here is my list!
with screenshots, Japanese text to the best of my ability (some of them are hard to read), and English translations
The karuta are supposed to be written in poem form and have 5 and 7 syllables in Japanese but for translating I just went with the closest meaning I didn't try to make them poems lol
Also, Miya and Reki's hand writing is too similar I tried to guess which one was which but I might have mixed a couple up.
gay_irl
Recently found this lovely manga at my library with what seems to me like great aroace representation! 'I want to be a wall' by Honami Shirono.
It's about an aromantic asexual woman and a gay man who marry for appearances and become close friends. (In Japan, asexual and aromantic are often referred to as the same thing, which is explained in the volume translation notes btw)
Here's a few pages that I thought did a good job of discussing things. As an enby who likes romance in stories (especially BL) but not so much in real life, I felt pretty seen.
Re-reading Karneval after Kaiju no. 8 is kind of wild. Every time the Circus crew talk about defeating their enemy, Kafka, I just think about Hibino Kafka and the face he'd make if he could hear them, lol.
is the adult in the room with us right now?

The guide includes a show’s basic summary; main genres/tropes/themes and official streaming links (additional info on how to watch at the end of this post)! You can find some content warnings in the reply section of this post. Shows are listed by countries, numbered by the order I recommend watching in, not by rating. All shows have happy endings unless specified otherwise. The list will hopefully be updated regularly (last updated on 04/04/2024, 98 queer shows in total).
Most shows are about mlm, I specify with coloured notes those that are focused on wlw, polyamory, aromantism/asexuality, etc.
Tumblr does not allow large texts or more than 30 images per post at the moment, so you can click on every country’s list to expand them and view them fully in a separate post. You can access this guide in a google doc here.

Okay guys, for writing/general reference, a bit about what a ‘blacksmith’ is and isn’t:
A blacksmith is a generalist, a person who uses tools and fire to work iron. Some blacksmiths work more specifically, so you get, say, an architectural blacksmith, who focuses more or less exclusively on things like gates, rails, fences, or an artist blacksmith, who makes wacky sculptures or what have you. These days, though, that’s a pretty blurry line. ‘Blacksmith’ is a pretty damn broad term, but it’s nowhere near broad enough to cover everything encompassed in ‘metalworker’, which is how I often see it used. There are a LOT of different skills for working metal, and no one knows them all. Some other terms:
A farrier shoes horses. They may make the shoes, or they may buy them and then size them, but they actually do the shoeing. Unless the blacksmith is also a farrier, they don’t know shit about horses’ hooves and are not qualified to deal with them and probably don’t want to.
A blacksmith works IRON, usually almost exclusively. They might work with bronze or do a bit of brazing, but those are really separate skillsets. If you work, say, tin and/or pewter, you are in fact a whitesmith. You could also be a silversmith or a coppersmith, and so on.
Knifemakers and swordsmiths have their own highly specialized and fairly complex specialties, and usually a blacksmith wouldn’t mess with that unless they want to pick up a new skillset or if they’re really the only game going for a long way around. By the same token, a swordsmith might never have learned the more general blacksmithing skills. They’re not the same thing is what I’m trying to say here. Likewise armorers. There’s overlap but it’s not the same thing.
If you make metal items via molds and casting, you work at a foundry and are a foundryman.
Look, when metalworkers and individual shops and masters were the height of industry, this shit got REALLY specific. There were people who spent their whole lives making pins. Just pins. Foundries specialized and made only bells, only cannon, only cauldrons, etc. This is scratching the surface, I just wanted to make the point that ‘blacksmith’ is not the same thing as ‘magical muscly person who knows how to do everything related to metal’.
OKAY, but based on the raws for daiya no b, the instruments they chose for the main characters so far, are REALLY fitting. I was in band in highschool, and and anyone else who else played instruments in a band would agree with me (hopefully)
Source: hyoubuqueen
Based on what i see so far:
Clarinets: (Tanba, Nori) They are the ones who are the base noise but they make a huge difference. They’re not sharp sounds BUT a good clarinet tone is hard to attain and takes many years of practice. They’re very mellow but they’re important to the underlying sound of the whole song. Hence Tanba and Nori’s humble/shy personalities yet they make all the difference to the team and often try the hardest.
Percussion: (Jun) Percussion encompasses all the rhythm instruments like drums, timpani etc as well as embellishments like cymbal/triangle. They’re extremely imperative because without percussion there is no mood or pace and the song sounds bare. Jun is the tempo of Seido, he sets the rhythm AND THAT’S EXTREMELY FITTING. They also have to have a good ear for tempo.
French Horns: (Zono, Nabe) They have to have a really large lung capacity. They’re the melody that is really deep but the sound resonates. They’re kind of like a mask, a huge layer that arcs throughout the song. There are often not too many french horns because they’re an instrument that isn’t as popular. But the sound is very unique. They’re also an underlying layer, but they cut through all the other sounds as very profound parts of the music.
Flutes: (Ryo, etc.) HIGH PITCHED NOISES; THEY’RE SUPPOSED TO BE REALLY ESSENTIAL and are often the “topping”. They have fast riffs; if a flute makes a mistake IT’S REALLY OBVIOUS–also the flute section has a much harder time to stay together so some talent/practice is needed. Because of this they have to be detailed and careful and really know their job. HENCE RYOSUKE. Along with the trumpets they have many solos and ALWAYS play.
Saxophones: There are two types shown in Daiya no B– Alto or Tenor Saxophone: (Kuramochi) This is the saxophone that is higher in sound, and usually the one throughout the saxophone group that has solos. Baritone Saxophone: (Tetsu) The lower end of the saxophone, and the instrument itself is larger. Together, the saxophone sections blends together the harshness of brass sounds. Saxophones are huge in supporting the music and the brass section. They’re like caramel, and when they have a solo it adds flare to the song. They have to be reliable support HENCE MOCHI AND TETSU.
Trumpets: (Eijun, Masuko, Chris) Oh my goodness the trumpets. They’re usually dubbed as the more hot headed of the band, the ambitious ones, the mood making ones. They are the more brash instruments in the band, yet they are the FIRE. Especially in fast paced, cool, songs they really bring the blaze. They make the music exciting. HENCE EIJUN. They’re as important as flutes, because first there’s so many and hard to connect, and second, their sounds are quite evident. They also have a sense of pride because a piece often rests on their sound. Basically, they’re entrusted with one of the most important jobs, and are usually the center of attention because you can ALWAYS hear them. They also have to have large lung capacity.
Trombones: (Furuya) Trombones require a lot of technique and are a leading instrument of the lower brass section. They can make the most resonating sound, so dynamics are this instruments forte. While having lots of single notes, this instrument needs consistency and determination because learning to breathe during the music is really difficult. SO STAMINA as well as strength and lung capacity. The instrument that isn’t dubbed cool at first but is essential to a song’s volume. The trombone sound reverberates and makes the rest of the band excited to keep pace. It’s perfect for Furuya.
In general, this post is nothing but my excitement for an official band au ( I hope im not missing anything or anybody) and my band history crying out. So i wanted to share lol BUT I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS.
*****Bonus: THE CONDUCTOR AKA MIYUKI KAZUYA (idk if he’s staying as a student conductor or the actual conductor). I’m sure that ones pretty self-explanatory–the conductor has to have all eyes throughout the band. He has to know and hear all the parts as well as anticipate what comes next and predict potential difficulties in music. He has to be the expert and gauge everyone’s level to make them work with the rest of the team. Also, he has to be able to mend the bald spots and some lack of skill in order to connect all different parts in the music as well as the people. He’s in control, cues everyone into their jobs, and in the end, if he hiccups then the whole thing falls apart. He has to be crazy and passionate about his job. He’s pivotal, and that’s Miyuki Kazuya for you.
I’m pretty sure no one’s going to read this.
Say it with me! Wheelchairs aren’t sad! Mobility aids aren’t sad! Mobility aids are instruments of freedom!
GO HARD OR GO HOME.
Oof I felt this
The way most autism literature describes "literal interpretation" is often not at all similar to how I experience it. Teenage me even thought I couldn't be autistic because I've always been able to learn metaphors easily.
In fact, I love wordplay of all kinds. Teenage me was fascinated to learn all the types of figurative language there are in poetry and literature.
But paperwork and questionnaires are hard, because there's so much they don't state clearly. Or they don't leave room for enough nuance.
"List all the jobs you've had, with start and end dates." What if I don't remember the exact day or month? Is the year enough?
"Have you been suffering from blurred vision?" Well, if I take off my glasses the whole world is blurred, but I'm fairly sure that's not what the intake form at the optometrist is asking.
Or the infamous (and infuriatingly stereotypical) "Would you rather go to a library or a party?" What sort of party? Where? Who's there? I work at a library. Am I currently at the library for work or pleasure? Does it have a good collection?
It's not common figures of speech that confound me. It's ambiguity, in situations that aren't supposed to be ambiguous.
Yikes, hadn't thought about this. We just got a new eftpos machine at work, what if we get a blind client one day?
Replacing physical buttons and controls with touchscreens also means removing accessibility features. Physical buttons can be textured or have Braille and can be located by touch and don't need to be pressed with a bare finger. Touchscreens usually require precise taps and hand-eye coordination for the same task.
Many point-of-sale machines now are essentially just a smartphone with a card reader attached and the interface. The control layout can change at a moment's notice and there are no physical boundaries between buttons. With a keypad-style machine, the buttons are always in the same place and can be located by touch, especially since the middle button has a raised ridge on it.
Buttons can also be located by touch without activating them, which enables a "locate then press" style of interaction which is not possible on touchscreens, where even light touches will register as presses and the buttons must be located visually rather than by touch.
When elevator or door controls are replaced by touch screens, will existing accessibility features be preserved, or will some people no longer be able to use those controls?
Who is allowed to control the physical world, and who is making that decision?
Every single time I see a take that amounts to "if you write about X happening, or like fiction where X happens, you like X" I'm reminded of this one time I was at a casual friends house as a young kid. We were in her room, pretending to "be orphans" escaping from an evil orphanage and having to take care of each other and fend for ourselves. It was all very Little Orphan Annie/All Dogs Go to Heaven and based on the 80s pop media.
And this girl's mom comes in, hears what we're playing and gets all MAD and UPSET. She says that if we play act something, it's because we want it to happen. So her daughter must WANT HER TO DIE.
First off lady, we were 6 year year olds, so take it down several notches. We barely had a concept of mortality for fucks sake. She made us feel so guilty and ashamed, because she was taking our game personally.
Now I have a 5 year old. And sometimes she looks at me and says "pretend you're dead, and I have to -" Whatever it is. Some adult task she's assigned herself.
And it's just so transparently obvious that she's practicing the idea of having to do things on her own. Which is exactly what 5 year olds are supposed to do. I actually find it very flattering that the only way she can envision me not being available to help her is to be literally deceased. Otherwise, obviously, she wouldn't have to do scary hard things alone.
It's a natural coping mechanism. She's self-soothing about what would happen if I wasn't there by play-acting independence in a perfectly safe environment. She's also practicing skills she needs, and making up excuses for practicing them on her own, without taking on the responsibility of being able to do them by herself all the time yet.
Humans mentally rehearse bad this in their brains all the time. We can do that by ruminating- going over worries over and over again, which tends to lead to anxiety and helplessness and depression. Or we can do it with a sense of play- by recognizing that the fiction is fiction and we can dip our toe into these experiences and expose ourselves to bad things without actually being injured.
My daughter does not want me dead. And I don't want bad things to happen in real life. But fiction and pretend help me face the horrors of the world and think about them without collapsing or messing myself up mentally.

New reality show idea: house renovation competition called "Generation Wars" and all the couples are, obviously, from different generations. They're all terrible at reno and their taste all embodies the worst stereotypes of their generation e.g. the millennial pair likes to paint everything beige or white.

“look at it, you know i can’t!” consider this your daily reminder that disabled people are the funniest people on earth
So, I think a major part of any worldbuilding should always involve food, and where it comes from. The worldbuilding around No Man's Land in Trigun: Stampede is a little tricky in this regard, since there's shown to be no real agriculture or plant life (Meryl's utter shock at the "flora" on Ship Three as a total foreign phenomenon suggests it's more rare than in the manga) so sustainable human-friendly food sources are rare and not really addressed. We see characters eating worms, and presumably there's whatever it is worms eat, and beyond that, it's suggested that pretty much all of humankind's nutrition comes from plants.
The desert dudes living off worm meat refer to "plant-based food" as an "extravagance" in the opening scene of episode 4 (aptly named "Hungry"). Meryl, by contrast, is grossed out by the idea of eating worm meat -- I think we can infer then, that Meryl, being a college-educated city girl, probably had regular access to Plant-generated food, while Outlanders are more dependent on alternative sources of nutrition.
Wolfwood, I think, falls closer to the latter category -- He's very used to eating worms, as we see in this episode, not even flinching at grabbing and devouring a whole worm, and even smoked dried worm legs as a kid in a later flashback, so supplementing his diet and other aspects of his life with worms is probably something he's used to doing for survival:
And I gotta say, the way Wolfwood antagonizes the others about eating worm-based food?
Yeah, it's a power play in some respects -- he's making a point to Vash about 'kill or be killed' to survive when he catches and throws a worm at him, and he's taunting Meryl to get a rise out of her with the roasted worm meat at the end of the episode.
But there's something very "Gross Big Brother" about it -- he's antagonizing them, but there's also some underlying level of care in it. He is showing Vash how Wolfwood thinks it's necessary to survive; he's bullying Meryl into eating the food that's available, because Wolfwood probably grew up with the understanding that you couldn't afford to turn your nose up at whatever food you got.
It's food, it's there, it's a valuable and scarce resource, and as much of an asshole as Stampede!Wolfwood is, he has those ingrained big brother instincts to look out for those around him. And food is an important part of that, because when you live with scarcity, food is life.
The whole bit with Zazie in disguise might be a charade (assuming Wolfwood already clocked Zazie from the get-go and it didn't take the worm devouring them for that card to be revealed) but it still pulls from Wolfwood's characterization in the '98 anime where he gives two of his last pieces of food to a couple of hungry-looking kids:
And the sentiment of "you still deserve to eat" as an expression of care is still real for him, especially given his smile when Vash repeats his words, finally eating some of the worm meat at the end of episode four:
Our worldbuilding implication is that food is scarce and rare in the Outlands, and Wolfwood is someone who knows how to survive by any means possible -- including eating whatever is available -- which is something he's nonetheless willing to share with others, because at his core he's a decent person who isn't as selfish as he may pretend to be.
And food is one hell of a love language.
Rereading the Lord of the Rings series recently, and it's so fascinating to me how much the series is a denial of the typical juvenile power-fantasy that is associated with the fantasy genre.
Like, the power-fantasy is the temptation the Ring uses against people It tempts Boromir with becoming the "one true king" that could save his people with fantastic power. It tempts Sam with being the savior of Middle Earth and turning the ruin that is Mordor into a great garden. It tempts Gandalf and Galadriel with being the messianic figure of legend who brings salvation to Middle Earth and great glory to herself.
The things the Ring tempts people with are becoming the typical protagonists of fantasy stories that we expect to see. and over and over we see that accepting that role, that fantasy of being the benevolent all-powerful hero, is a bad thing. LotR is about how power, even power wielded with benevolent intent, is corrupting.
And its so fascinating how so much of modern fantasy buys into the very fantasy LotR denies. Most modern fantasy is about being that Heroic power-fantasy. About good amassing power to rival evil. But LotR dares not to. It dares to be honest that there is no world where anyone amasses that power and remains good.
I guess that's one of the reasons its so compelling.

Next year marks twenty years since the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film was released, and I'm wondering what a 2025 remake would look like.
The kids still have their gimmicks, but on social media. Augustus has a food blog. Veruca posts her shopping hauls on Tiktok. Violet has her own chewing gum line. Mike streams his gaming.
The Bucket family have two, maybe three ancient flip top phones between them on the cheapest prepaid plan available.
At the factory entrance Wonka demands all phones be handed in or turned off inside, no filming allowed. Maybe the factory has its own, very weird intranet system that does odd things to outside devices when you try to secretly film stuff? Could be a good modern update to the story so long as social media adds to the wackiness instead of taking over.
Types of attraction
Sexual - I wanna have sex with that
Romantic - I want to date that
Sensual - I want to hug that
Platonic - I want to be friends with that
Platonic crushes do exist. They are called “squishes”. You go through the same process of having a romantic or sexual crush but instead of landing them in bed, you’re on the floor at 2am with pizza rolls, Shrek in the background, talking about eldritch monstrosities (or whatever your shared interest is)
Aesthetic - that looks so heckin’ cool/pretty I love it
Intellectual - the desire to engage with another in an intellectual manner, i.e. having a conversation, picking their brain, and finding out how they think
Terms describing degree of attraction
Aromantic - lack of romantic attraction
Asexual - lack of sexual attraction
Aroace - lack of both sexual and romantic attraction
Demi - attraction only forms once a strong emotional bond has been formed
Grey/gray - rarely/seldom experiences attraction
Allosexual - someone who experiences sexual attraction
I think I’ve also heard/seen it referred to as ‘arosexual’ but that’s honestly a bit confusing
Alloromantic - someone who experiences romantic attraction
I personally shorten both of those to “allo” (pronounced ‘aloe’)
Apothiosexual - sex-repulsed
Apothioromantic - romance-repulsed
Apothiaroace - often shortened to just ‘apothi’. In addition to being aroace, apothis are repulsed by romantic/sexual scenes, items, displays, etc. to varying degrees
Sex-neutral and sex-positive/favourable aces exist as well
Not all of us have the same level of comfort with sexual and romantic activities so please check. I mean that applies to everyone anyway, but please check and don’t assume that just because someone is aro/ace, that doesn’t mean they are sex/romance repulsed
Queerplatonic - Queerplatonic typically refers to a relationship that bends the lines between a romantic relationship and a non-romantic relationship. A queerplatonic relationship (QPR) often goes beyond what is socially acceptable for a platonic relationship but does not fit the typical notion of a romantic relationship.
Alterous attraction - a type of emotional attraction to someone that isn’t entirely romantic or platonic.
Chastity - actively refraining from sexual activities. This is NOT part of the ace/aro spectrum, though it is a common assumption when someone says they are ace/aro. Thankfully we’re getting a bit more representation in media now so it’s not as common of an assumption as it used to be, but it’s still there, especially in those communities.
Microlabels/Terms describing flavour of attraction Note: -sexual is used fo many of these so we don't have to deal with duplicates confusing things. All of these prefixes can be used with -romantic, -sexual, -platonic, and I imagine -alterous as well
Abrosexual - orientation fluctuates between a variety of orientations
Aceflux - similar to abrosexual, but orientation is contained to asexual spectrum
Acespike - someone who is asexual but may experience intense, brief, and random bouts of sexual attraction
Aegosexual - disconnect between oneself and the target of arousal
Amicusromantic/sexual - only experiences romantic attraction to those who they have formed a platonic relationship with (subset of demi)
Angled aroace - the same as oriented, but for those who are demi, grey, flux, etc.
Anthrosexual - someone who is attracted to humans and alterhumans regardless of gender identity/expression
Caedsexual - previously allo, but now ace due to past trauma
Cupiosexual - wanting a sexual relationship but not experiencing sexual attraction
Finsexual/gynesexual - attraction to femininity
Fraysexual - opposite of demi. Attraction dissipates once an emotional connection has been formed
Linsexual - attraction to androgyny
Lithosexual - experiencing sexual attraction but not wanting it to be reciprocated
Loveless Romantic/Lovelessromantic - those who cannot feel love or feel disconnected from love but can feel romantic attraction/don't feel disconnected from the concept of romance
Minsexual/androsexual - attraction to masculinity
Placiosexual - not wanting to be on the receiving end of sexual activities but wishing to perform them on others
Quiosexual - unable to distinguish between sexual attraction and other forms of attraction
Qui(r)oromantic - inability to distinguish between platonic and romantic attraction
Reciprosexual - not experiencing sexual attraction towards someone until you discover they experience sexual attraction towards you
Requiessexual - similar to caedsexual, but rather than trauma, ace identity originates from a state of emotional exhaustion, usually from a past sexual experience
Oriented aroace - an aromantic asexual (aroace) individual who experiences a form of tertiary attraction, that they feel is significant enough to warrant a place alongside their aroace orientation. (i.e. gay aroace, bi aroace)
Examples of mixed orientations
Heteroromantic asexual biplatonic
Poly greyromantic pansexual
Apothi abroplatonic
Placiosexual aromantic finplatonic
Aroace cupioplatonic
Pan lithioromantic
Fraysexual biromantic aplatonic
You can get WAY more specific than what these cover, but just to give a general idea
Amatonormativity
So you've got gas during the session. Blame it on the clinic's therapy animal. You can make one up if necessary. Oh dear, Fluffy's popped off again. Fluffy can even be another client's service animal in the other room, a neighbour's pet come to visit.
It's a stinking hot summer afternoon and the client doesn't want the fan on, or perhaps a frosty winter morning with the heaters on full blast. It's time to get creative: your sweat dripping onto the client's back isn't sweat, it's essential oil. Sea salt and musk. Why yes, of course it's supposed to be this pungent, it's for clearing the sinuses. You're welcome.
