Sewing Machines & Planned Obsolescence
I've got these two sewing machines, made about 100 years apart. An old treadle machine from around 1920-1930, that I pulled out of the trash on a rainy day, and a new Brother sewing machine from around 2020.
I've always known planned obsolescence was a thing, but I never knew just how insidious it was till I started looking at these two side by side.
I wasn't feeling hopeful at first that I'd actually be able to fix the old one, I found it in the trash at 2 am in a thunderstorm. It was rusty, dusty, soggy, squeaky, missing parts, and 100 years old.
How do you even find specialized parts 100 years later? Well, easily, it turns out. The manufacturers at the time didn't just make parts backwards compatible to be consistent across the years, but also interchangeable across brands! Imagine that today, being able to grab a part from an old iPhone to fix your Android.
Anyway, 6 months into having them both, I can confidently say that my busted up trash machine is far better than my new one, or any consumer-grade sewing machine on the market.
Old Machine Guts
The old machine? Can sew through a pile of leather thicker than my fingers like it's nothing. (it's actually terrifying and I treat it like a power tool - I'll never sew drunk on that thing because I'm genuinely afraid it'd sew through a finger!) At high speeds, it's well balanced and doesn't shake. The parts are all metal, attached by standard flathead screws, designed to be simple and strong, and easily reachable behind large access doors. The tools I need to work on it? A screwdriver and oil. Lost my screwdriver? That's OK, a knife works too.
New Machine Guts
The new machine's skipping stitches now that the plastic parts are starting to wear out. It's always throwing software errors, and it damn near shakes itself apart at top speed. Look at it's innards - I could barely fit a boriscope camera that's about as thick as spaghetti in there let alone my fingers. Very little is attached with standard screws.
And it's infuriating. I'm an engineer - there's no damn reason to make high-wear parts out of plastic. Or put them in places they can't be reached to replace. There's no reason to make your mechanism so unbalanced it's reaching the point of failure before reaching it's own design speed. (Oh yeah there is, it's corporate greed)
100 years, and your standard home sewing machine has gone from a beast of a machine that can be pulled out of the literal waterlogged trash and repaired - to a machine that eats itself if you sew anything but delicate fast-fashion fabrics that are also designed to fall apart in a few years.
Looking for something modern built to the standard that was set 100 years ago? I'd be looking at industrial machines that are going for thousands of dollars... Used on craigslist. I don't even want to know what they'd cost new.
We have the technology and knowledge to manufacture "old" sewing machines still. Hell, even better, sewing machines with the mechanical design quality of the old ones, but with more modern features. It would be so easy - at a technical level to start building things well again. Hell, it's easier to fabricate something sturdy than engineer something to fail at just the right time. (I have half a mind to see if any of my meche friends with machine shops want to help me fabricate an actually good modern machine lol)
We need to push for right-to-repair laws, and legislation against planned obsolescence. Because it's honestly shocking how corporate greed has downright sabotaged good design. They're selling us utter shit, and expecting us to come back for more every financial quarter? I'm over it.
- Randomly skipping back and forth across the living room because I felt like it
- Combining two completely unrelated fandoms in my head and wondering how it would pan out for hours on end
- Consuming hard boiled eggs with the shell (crunch crunch)
- Staring. Sometimes accidentally at a living person
- Waiting specifically till after the sun has gone down to write out an idea I had because writing while the sun is up is strictly forbbiden in my head
- and finally
- Reading reader x character prompts on tumblr but replacing the reader with another character (all the Revali x Reader prompts are now Revalink)

I wish I'd started picking up hobbies before my social anxiety started because now I can't even learn to ride a bike or rollerscate because I MIGHT FALL OVER IN PUBLIC AND DIE OF EMBARRASSMENT
So I was just reminded to post a picture of my soaps so here they are! I make quite a few of them and sell them at my moms church because the people there are really nice. I’m not really religious but it’s a fun hobby. The green one is Christmas wreath, the blue and white one is peppermint, the snowman is apple cinnamon, and the flower is cranberry.
Hello I just realized that I never really introduced myself! So hello, My name is Tyler and I go by He/they pronouns. I am transgender and gay and I am also a minor. Some things I like are Greek Mythology, General history, floriography, FNaF, Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss, DnD, and Marvel/DC. Some of my skills include sewing (sometimes), writing, baking, making soap, and cooking. I probably will only be putting things about Floriography, Greek Mythology, history, baking, eventually some of my soaps, and maybe some of my sewing projects. My favorite musical artists are Penelope Scott, Pentatonix, Madilyn Mei, Chappell Roan, Melanie Martinez, Cavetown, and Beetlebug. I enjoy fictional books mostly but I also will sometimes read nonfiction books, they just don’t typically grab my attention as much. My friends and I keep a collection of quotes and I might share some of them here, with peoples permission of course. I’ll also probably share some funny moments from the DnD campaigns that I am in. I am here for anyone who needs a friend to talk to, especially after the 2024 elections, so please feel free to reach out if you ever need support! That’s all about me, I hope you have a lovely day/afternoon/night.
I made a squirmle oc :D (I think that’s how you spell it) It’s based off my temporary holder oc Jakey!
I bound my first book! It was so much fun and I plan on making more as gifts for my family. The stitching is a little wonky, and I cheated on some of the smaller pages but I love how it turned out! I learned so much about books and how they are made from @sealemon 's YouTube channel. Please check out her content!
Here's the first spread I've done:
I hope to fill the whole book with journal spreads based on my favourite quotes, books, and songs. I love @olivebreezy 's blog, it's full of beautiful journal spreads and great inspiration!

I wish I could start roller skating again ౨ৎ ˖ ࣪⊹
Heyo, nice to meet you :) this is an introduction post!
I’m Michelly or Mi, a Christian and artist. I try many things depending on my current obsession, but this is what I usually do:
The story I’m working on is Ashes, AO3 / Wattpad, you can see in the hashtag #ashes all the posts about it!
Ocs: #Ethan #Maya #Behati #Yuno #Kenyan #Sylris #Hiélo #Maivtre #Odabrani #MichellyMY Worldbuilding: #Martra #Walinugo
Besides it, the things I like are books, mangas/manhwas, animes, games, and skating. Hmm I was also learning Russian and Japanese a time ago, but I stopped because I don’t have time 😭
This is my list of mangas/manhwas:
And these are the books that kept me thinking about them forever:
(Geez, The Silent Patient is an amazing story, but I will be NEVER reading it again 😟)
I have a side blog where I share posts I liked and my random thoughts, feel free to check it out: @mimyreblog
I guess that’s it! If I think about something else I’ll update this post. I hope you like my arts 💖

So the other day (read: like 5 months ago) I bought some art at a local shop and talked to the cashier a bit about the artist while checking out, at which point the cashier dropped this wonderful nugget:
"Oh I love that artist, she's local and suuuuper young, she's like, 30."
Y'all
Y'ALL
YOU ARE NEVER TO OLD TO DO THE THING. 30 IS SUPER YOUNG. 50 IS YOUNG. YOU'RE BARELY AN ADULT AT 70.
Learn new things, try new things, continue improving on the thing you're just kinda okay at. It's never "too late" to do things.
My favorite Hobby is finding new obsessions every six months.
I remember about a year ago I watched the Big Bang series and was super into science.
Started watching Neil deGrasse Tyson, Hawking and Brian Cox videos.
Even bought one of Hawking’s books, which I read probably 20 pages of and had to google words and stuff every other page.
I even decided I wanted to study Physics in college. I should really be stopped.
Project: Photography Camera: Galaxy Grand Prime+ Evething looks beautiful through the eye of the camera. I'm an amateur with a passion for visuals, and this is one of the hobbies I can't go without. So browse through and if you are a professional photographer, or a photography enthusiast let me know what you think and suggest things to capture while I smooth my angles. #ENJOY! #beautiful #eye #camera #amateur #visuals #photography #hobbies #professional #enthusiast #capture https://www.instagram.com/p/BoT9flSAMuY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1talypydhivja
What are your hobbies? I have quite a few. Since tumblr is dumb and I keep getting my posts taken down, I guess I’ll have to cover up. Shoot me a message if you want the uncensored version. Or any pictures really. I just like to have fun and show off. No catch. Try it out 🤷🏻♂️
My first internet archive upload. (˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧

Backstory: My parents and grandparents own all kinds of vinyl VHS and DVDs, So I decided to virtually archive some of them along with some other things we have here in storage. I have a lot fond memories watching Martial Arts Films with my grandmother so these films have a soft place in my heart. As a Person of Color I found that martial arts has a very soft spot in our communities. Constantly being revisited over and over in movies, music videos, anime, and art. It seems we find kinship in the idea of overcoming an oppressive force (for obvious reasons). You definitely can't fight the evil regime without a martial arts scene.

I went fossil hunting down at the Warren (in Folkestone, Kent, UK) on Thursday last week. These are some of my favourite finds from the trip (I washed them up at home).
Fossil hunting is great fun. If you live in the UK, and fancy giving it a shot, then there are some really handy websites that you should check out. https://ukfossils.co.uk/ and http://www.discoveringfossils.co.uk/fossil-locations-of-great-britain/
If you don't live in the UK but still want to give it a go then I would recommend looking for local fossil hunting clubs, societies and websites. Failing that you should try to look for areas where sedimentary rocks are being eroded. For instance, cliffs by the sea, rivers, old quarries, etc.
Just make sure you don't trespass or go anywhere too dangerous. For instance, if you are fossil hunting under cliffs at the beach, don't get to close to the cliffs (falling debris and cliffs collapsing) and plan around the tides (you don't want to get cut off).
Hey ya’ll! I’m not much of a tutorial person, but this was a technique that I learned from Syuzuki, one of my favorite artists back in the day, when I was 13. I memorized the technique and it’s been one of the most useful things I can do on photoshop. This was something that really helped me, and I hope that it will be useful for even some of you.
In this tutorial, I will be going step by step how I take something from my sketchbook and color it on photoshop.
