but there’s nowhere to hide from the ghost in my mind it’s cold in these bones of a man and a child and there’s no one who knows and there’s nowhere to go there’s no one to see who can see to my soul

What she says: I'm fine.

What she means: Why does everyone forget that Martha was the one who called Moritz a sad soulful sleepyhead? Why does no one think about the fact that Martha understood and appreciated Moritz most while everyone else ignored him? Why don't we talk more about the fact that Martha Bessel would like a boy like Moritz? A boy who's nice and sad and sweet. All the other girls like Melchior because he's dangerous and rebellious and vibrant and angry. But Martha already has enough dangerous and angry men in her life, and she isn't looking to escape a sheltered life like all the other girls, she's looking to feel safe and protected and maybe find someone who she can sympathize with? Why does no one talk about Martha and Moritz taking care of each other, and reminding each other that they're worth so much more than their parents think, planning to build a new world just like Wendla and Melchior? Is any one else disturbed by the fact that Martha and Moritz don't get to rebel, because they won't make it that long?

Little things you notice when you’ve seen DWSA too many times

-Melchior nervously tucks his shirt in when Wendla turns away to explore his ‘private place for thinking.’

-In the same scene only in the Broadway staging, Melchior follows Wendla all around the ‘tree’ trying to catch her attention, but of course she can’t hear so she keeps walking around

-Hanschen turns to Ernst’s voice and shushes him when he laughs during the vineyard scene

-Hanschen looks back (kind of ominously?) at Ernst’s voice when he walks off with Ernst

-Hanschen is super shady obv- he laughs with the teacher at Moritz’s mistake, and sarcastically slow-claps while walking across the stage after Melchior flips everyone off in the end of ‘Totally Fucked’

-During the pre-show warm-up, the actors start slowly transforming into their characters after they put their costumes on. Daniel Durant walks nervously with bowed legs as Moritz; Andy stands in the corner and glares out at the audience as Hanschen; the sisters Thea and Melitta stroll together as a pair; Otto walks around adorably in his sailor outfit while practicing verbalizing words..

-Melchior stares at Wendla very intensely all through Mama Who Bore Me

-Krysta operates the spotlight on the actors. Also she has a really cute sort of dressing room with a lamp and drawings on the wall if you look up to the left

-Moritz occasionally looks over at his voice like ‘wtf?’ when Ilse talks about the shit that went down in Priapia, and his voice shrugs back like ‘I have no idea dude.’ Also Ilse seems to have a bit of a rougher time communicating with Moritz in ASL.

-When Ilse suddenly shows up and makes Moritz drop his gun in surprise, his voice grabs it and hides it in his pocket. Later when Ilse leaves, Moritz gestures for his voice to give it back. Then he covers his voice’s microphone and lowers it. His voice lowers his head and walks away slowly.

-On a different note, the way Austin pronounces NO THANK YOU (like nho tHank hyou) to his bullies at the reformatory fascinates me.

Anyone else notice some things that one-time viewers might miss/might want to look out for..?

More little things you notice when you’ve seen Deaf West Spring Awakening too many times

(Part 1)

- Wendla looks at her ‘voice’ for guidance during the hayloft scene, but her voice turns away as if powerless, leaving Wendla to fend for herself. @notresponsibleforlostitems

-Wendla’s voice acts very anxious during the hayloft scene, at one point sitting in a fetal position and jumping up in shock when Melchior tries to unbutton Wendla’s top.

- In the classroom scene, Otto and Ernst (both played by deaf actors) have no idea what their assignment is because the teacher only says it aloud. Otto looks at Melchior expectantly until he translates to ASL, while Ernst has to get Georg to write the instructions down for him. @theta-knight

-Also in the classroom scene, Melchior signs as he speaks behind the teacher’s back so that his deaf classmates can understand. He stops abruptly whenever  the teacher turns around (the teacher punishes the students who use ASL, as deaf education at the time strictly enforced oralism).

- Sometimes Ernst’s “I know” after Hanschen comments on the bells in the vineyard scene sounds like a question because, you know, he probably didn’t hear them. @theta-knight

- The drummer is ‘Gregor the chimney sweep’ and he looks really disappointed that he doesn’t get to explain where babies come from to Wendla. @stepliana

- During ‘The Dark I Know Well’ it always gets me when Ernst runs to the stairs behind the girls and starts signing with them instead of with the boys who approach them ominously. Ernst also hugs the teddy bear before putting it in the trunk during ‘And Then There Were None’ @cocodowntherabbithole

- Only in the Broadway staging, Melchior interacts directly with Wendla’s voice during the beating scene. She stops him from leaving the circle and sternly pleads for him to return to Wendla. (I’m still trying to unpack what this is supposed to mean tbh). In this scene Wendla also stands directly parallel to her voice, occasionally looking over and following her example to gain some boldness  @notresponsibleforlostitems

- At the very end after the bow Austin and Sandra (Melchior and Wendla) always cross the stage towards each other and grab hands and it’s adorable (and one time they kissed?!?) @now-later-soon

-In the Broadway staging, when Melchior starts singing All That’s Known, the rest of the students lean all the way back in their seats in slow-motion while chanting in Latin. This is a very cool effect, but it is also likely the choreographer Spencer Liff’s deliberate signal to deaf audience members that a song has begun. He said in a recent interview that he watched the show with earplugs to gain the deaf viewers’ perspective, and made changes so that they are able differentiate between the scenes with and without music.

- During The Dark I Know Well, if you look in the background during Ilse’s scene you see Melchior, Moritz, and Otto cracking their fingers almost preparing to go after her @cocodowntherabbithole

During the Desdemona part of My Junk, Marlee Matlin (I think playing Hanschen’s mother?) is painting a picture of him as a child up on the balcony @now-later-soon

Ernst gives his voice a hug and a kiss before walking off alone with Hanschen @cocodowntherabbithole

*Needs headphones to work*

Left: OBC

Right: ASL Revival

Note: Sometimes the right side will sound kind of weird, that’s bc the revival goes just the tiniest bit faster and there were times where I had to move parts of the audio so the rest of the song would match.

This is the first time I’ve ever done something like this so I guess it’s not that bad

what she says: i’m fine

what she means: Deaf West’s Spring Awakening was the first show on Broadway to incorporate American Sign Language into not only the songs and dialogue, but the choreography. The choreography (and essentially the whole show) were blocked and shaped around the ASL, and it wasn’t even nominated in the Best Choreography category for the Tony’s

what she says: I'm fine

what she means: Michael Arden was robbed of the Tony for best direction of a musical. He told a story in a non-verbal language. He brought in deaf actors and hard of hearing actors and actors in wheel chairs and put them on Broadway, something that had never been done before. Deaf West Spring Awakening got snubbed and deserved so much more. The show didn't even get nominated for best choreography for incorporating sign language into dance. What's probably the worst thing is that Michael Arden wasn't even shown when his name was called in the nomination category. They couldn't even bother to be sure they showed the right person. This show did something no other show has done before and to not recognize that is a disrespect to the deaf community.
