she gets me she just does
Founded to protect the world in the event that the Avengers disbanded, the young heroes, labelled “super-powered fanboys”, and later the “Young Avengers” by the public, are forced to step up after the disastrous events of the Civil War which left the previous Avengers fractured and at odds.
I wanted to be part of a family. I wanted to be loved.
When I saw you fumbling, teetering, when I saw your desperate desire to be loved crushing you--what did I do? What did I do, Charles?

Happy Bird-day Hawks!!! ✨🎂
Not quite sure how to say this, but some years ago a fellow fan and I embarked on a 200k+ word angstfest of a Charles/Erik fic. We were within a couple chapters of finishing when Life happened (in my case, horrific crushing anxiety and the tenure track--these two were not entirely unrelated) and the fic fell by the wayside. Eventually it fell of AO3 altogether for reasons having to do with my co-author moving on from fannish spaces and my complete disconnection from anything that had once given me joy. I was thoroughly out of fandom by that time myself, and it was with a lot of surprise that I saw--when I opened AO3 and Tumblr for the first time in more than six years thanks to BG3--people had been asking about CE, what had happened to it, what would happen.
Since it seems there's been a resurgence of interest in XMFC-verse and Charles/ Erik in particular, it seemed like a good time to resurrect the fic and, while not republishing it on AO3, posting it as a PDF that acknowledges my now-unnamed co-author and the fact that without them this fic would not exist. Both of us made it what it is.
The PDF linked above also includes a final chapter that ties up Charles and Erik's story together, as well as other related threads from the supporting characters. I wrote it based on memories of discussions about how we both saw Charles and Erik's story ending, and--of course!--what could realistically happen with Shaw. This final chapter is entirely a solo effort on my part, and thus its many deficiencies are my fault alone.
Before reading the fic, PLEASE READ THE TAGS ON THE FIRST PAGE and take note of the Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings retained from the fic's AO3 listing.
Anyway, this thing has been a long time coming. I hope you all enjoy.
