svishnuu - THE WAY I SEE IT
THE WAY I SEE IT

In a nutshell or two: I love aerospace. I'm an engineer, writer, a photographer, and a reader. And, of course, a blogger. I spent my high school years in New York City, managing to defy every urban bum new yorker stereotype (except for the "bum" part). My school life basically revolved around Aviation and Science Bowl. If you continue to read this, I can assure you three (3) things: (1) impeccable grammar (yea, ok) and spelling (thanks to auto spell check), (2) a total lack of entertainment (literally, everyone’s view of entertainment is different), (3) an alliteration of photos, and (4) so many listings. (and of course parentheses)

Mangalyaan ("Mars-craft") | Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)

Destination: Mars

image

India is now well on its way to having an interplanetary presence. The country has successfully launched the Mars Orbiter Mission, a reconnaissance satellite that will orbit the Martian atmosphere for elusive chemicals.

The integration of the five scientific instruments was completed at ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore, and the finished spacecraft was successfully launched from Sriharikotta on 5 November 2013.

India's space agency would be just the fourth to reach the planet -- a symbolic win over countries like China, whose interplanetary missions have fallen short.

The historic moment is finally here.

It's Official: Voyager 1 Has Left the Solar System

The Historic Moment Is Finally Here.

After months debate, scientists around the world now agree that NASA's Voyager 1 has become the first man-made object to leave our solar system (iknowsomeofyoumaywonderwhythismatters). And it only!! took 36 years to make the 12 billion mile-long journey.

Voyager is now on its way to another star. At it's current speed of 100,000 miles per hour, it'll only take her 40,000 years.

Born to lead? "Success" can be an inherited trait

So… this post has been sitting in my draft box for a while now, just decided to upload it now.

**Disclaimer** This might demotivate you or motivate you.

Here we go:

Study conducted at the University College London (UCL) shows that Genetic differences are significantly associated with the likelihood that people take on managerial responsibilities.

A specific DNA sequence is associated with the tendency for individuals to occupy a leadership position and one’s intellect and moral aptitude.

So how worthy was this study?

Using a large twin sample, the international research team, which included academics from Harvard, NYU, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of California at Berkley, estimate that a quarter of the observed variation in leadership behavior between individuals can be explained by genes passed down from their parents. Technically, the researchers have identified a genotype, called rs4950, which is found in “successful” people. They compared genetic samples from thousands of individuals with information about jobs and relationships, finding that in both surveys there was a significant association between rs4950 and leadership.

Believe in destiny•fate? Well maybe, it's the rs4950.

Although the vast scientific community and respectful people from the academia fondly agrees (obviously they have rs4950), I  have a tad regret in accepting this fact study. Because, according to 'science', it is technically impossible difficult for a dumb less-powered DNA to become successful (I know this might sound messed up)… Philosophically however, Any Rand would have a love•hate interest in this, but that's life… well, science.

boeing 787 | dreamliner

Boeing 787 | Dreamliner

The boring 787 Dreamliner is a commercial jet from Boeing, it’s the most fuel-efficient airliner in the planet and is with composite materials—specifically, carbon fiber reinforcement plastic. According to Boeing, it’s made of 80% composite by volume, making it the lightest aeroairplane in its class. It also includes “nice” passenger favorable like: bigger windows, noise reduction (quieter), and oh, more space. So, I don’t see how this is a revolutionary aircraft, rather, I see it as an evolutionary aircraft.

So what’s the problem? Well, this is the thing: the Dreamliner has been plagued with accreting problems. In layman’s term, its battery can easily catch on fire. So axiomatically you know this is serious; hence, this is why the FAA grounded all 787s late last year (2012) shortly after service by many airlines around the world.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner completely relies on electrical power than any other previous plane. Commercial jet airlines – other than the 787 – uses bleed air, which is super-hot, super-pressurized air taken from within the engine, and used it for all kinds of functions, from de-icing to pressurizing the cabin itself. However, this greatly reduces the efficiency of the engine. In order to prevent this loss in efficiency, the Dreamliner relies solely on electrical power, from some hyper-high-capacity lithium ion batteries. So, the problem is – these batteries have a rapture catching on fire and create angst in Boeing employees.

The famous lithium ion is chosen because it's got a super-high energy content for its size and weight – like, twice that of the batteries  (lead-acid battery) used in electric cars – but it also has one huge problem. That would be heat. Although there are different kinds of lithium ion batteries, the Dreamliner uses cobalt oxide batteries, the same kind as what's used in smartphones, laptops, and tablets. So, obviously the batteries on your phone don’t catch on fire; this is because they are small. However, the batteries on the 787s are huge and have the tendency to catch on fire.

I was pondering like you too on why Boeing engineers didn’t find this issue during the preliminary testing stage.  So here is why: The Dreamliner has had a very, very long and tumultuous birthing process, with multiple redesigns over the years. The 787 has been several years, yes years, behind schedule for deliveries. But theses delays were not directly related to the batteries catching fire. According to Boeing, nobody knowshow this problem got by.

A good guess for this – “just got by” – would be that with such a newfangled electrical power system, nobody really knew how the Dreamliner would respond with repeated use.

Anyway, after three months, today (Apr 19, 2013) FAA approved the Boeing’s plans to fix the 787’s batteries, a decision that could allow the planes to return to service within weeks. The decision was a major milestone for Boeing and its innovative jet.

This post is already long enough, so, I’m not writing what the Boeing’s fix is for 787’s power system.

SpaceX's Grasshopper Rocket

SpaceX's Grasshopper Rocket beautifully perfectly Hovers!

In this recent test, the Grasshopper vertically took-off, ascended to about 12 stories, hovered for few seconds and then deliberately landed back down.

And of course, it's indeed meant to go much, much higher (to space) but progress is progress.

fiscal cliff

so what exactly is the Fiscal Cliff? I’m sure you seen the phrase - Fiscal Cliff - dominating the radio, TV, internet, etc. for the past month and days to come. Pundits (politicians) and economists at Harvard turned their attention to the dire predictions of the possible and theoretically outcome of “the fiscal cliff.” Overall, at its core, this event could leave a deep impact and dominate our lives for the foreseeable future. Think of it as the economic version of Hurricane Sandy that swarmed the Wall Street (the Northeast) few weeks ago. It all begins with the December 31, 2012 expiration of the Bush tax cuts. Originally, these tax cuts were schedules to end back in 2010; however, they were extended for two years in a horse trade between President Obama and the GOP (Republican Party) controlled Congress. If you can recall the 2010 election victory, wherein President Obama agreed to continue tax cuts for all Americans in an exchange for Congress agreeing to extend the unemployment benefits for ones out of work. So, if the Bush tax cuts is just allowed to expire - it will raise taxes for most Americans. And another godawful news is that the temporary, Obama administration’s two percent tax cuts, is also scheduled to expire on December 31st. Nothing done, on January 1st, millions of Americans will be paying $2k to $3k additional dollars in taxes each year - leaving them with $3k less to spend (on our Capitalistic consumer driven economy).   These cuts hit all areas of the federal budget, including the Medicare, the Education, the FEMA, and the Defense. When you add up the increased payment of taxes and the cuts in government spending, we are looking at taking somewhere around $800 billion out of the U.S. economy next year—producing the potential for devastating consequences. Now, Obama administration and the GOP have quite different thoughts on taxing the ones who earn more than $250,000 a year. The whole government is sort of polymorphic now. Although the media might make you feel cacophonous (or that this post is obfuscation) for the next week, the White House will soon release the economic road-map for the upcoming years.

ASTRO PHOTO

ASTRO PHOTO

A peek into the sky.

Just used my DLSR and some tweaks (no cheating, meaning no Photohop filters)

Color in this photo is used to highlight interesting features of the celestial object being seen. It is added to the separate black-and-white exposures that are combined to make the final image.

Filters allow variety of wavelengths of light to be visible to our eye. Since the cameras can detect light outside the visible light spectrum, the use of filters allows scientists to study "invisible" features of objects — those only visible in ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths.

by the way, the only way to see stars from New York City is by using a DSLR/telescope
