super late to the party here, but honestly all i wanted out of the loki series was at least neutral rep for genderfluidity/bisexualtiy for loki, maybe have sigyn make an appearance, and learn more about loki's time with thanos/in the void. the only thing on this list i got was loki's sex being "fluid", and the mention of bisexuality that is undermined in the same episode its introduced by having loki fall in love with sylvie

If you complain about Sylvie being "harmful queer rep" BUT want "Lady Loki" in the MCU, which was Loki possessing Sif's body just to torment Sif, I need you to sit down and shut up. a. If you use AI to create a "proper" Lady Loki or love interest for Loki, you can't complain about the blatant product placement in S2. I am not a fan of product placement either and won't defend it, but those are the rules. Show some integrity. And before you ask, I have not given a cent to Disney since they pissed me off with attempts to trademark Dia de los Muertos for Coco.

If you complain about how being a "Loki" is not a role (unlike Spiderman) and how it should have been all 100% Tom Hiddleston, you don't get to call it selfcest as a gotcha, because you're already differentiating between the variants with different DNA. Like do y'all hate selfcest or not? Make up your mind. The series treats a Loki as an archetype of sorts, so it can be a role. Also, having the same name does not make you related because we don't know what Sylvie's parents are? And we don't even know if Sylvie is also a Jotun, a prop claims she isn't.

If you say you want Sylvie dead but claim to not be misogynistic, because you'd love if a specific love interest from the comics or mythology replaced her, STFU. You only like those because you can project whatever the fuck you want onto them.

If you claim Sylvie is a misogynistic depiction of women but salivate over characters written by cishet white men in the 1960s-1980s that made wanting to fuck Thor or being in a monogamous marriage with Loki their entire personality (there's so MANY OF THESE), STFU. Do you hear yourself? And no, it's not misogynistic of me, a woman, to criticize offensive depictions of women by cishet white men. They're not real.

Our MCU!Loki is not the young adult Ikol reincarnation currently. Of course 20-something Verity is not going to be there! The Loki show should be praise for having multiple female cast members around the same age as the protagonist and pragmatic clothing choices that allowed SdM to nurse her baby.

The comics aren't perfect. As much as I loved the recent Dan Watters run (and German Peralta's art), the comics art has some very questionable tendencies, especially regarding Loki's nose when she's femme. It's associated with how some kinds of facial features are considered masculine or feminine (and racialized). Noses have no gender, ffs! Women with nose bumps exist! For some reason Loki always has a tiny button nose when she's a woman or femme. There's also the BLATANT physiognomy that has ALWAYS PLAGUED Thor comics since their inception, and Loki's facial features as they've become more "grey" and less evil is an interesting study. Peralta's far from being the only artist with this problem, and is far from being the most problematic. For comparison from Loki (2023) run:

i agree as well, although i'm on the fresher side for tumblr. i only joined in 2021/2022 times for fanart and stuff, and i started branching out into other things like the queer community on here, or the political side of tumblr. of course, on other sites there are the same communities, but i think the lack of an algorithm makes it easier for me to seek those communites out instead of waiting for them to come on come generate for you page.

i find myself lurking more often and getting updates from my moots notifications. I think it's more so because i came from platforms like tiktok and instagram, where likes are liek currency, and i'm a lurker on those sites as well so im not surprised with that being how i act on here as well.

In Defense of Loki (Masterpost)

Since Tumblr mobile is a little bitch and won’t let people navigate to custom pages, I’ve decided to convert my Ragnarok Sucks compendium to a masterpost for mobile access. So here we go.

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Once upon a time, I—like so many other filmgoers—enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok. If you dig deeply enough into this here Tumblr, you may even come upon instances of me defending it or celebrating certain aspects of it. So I absolutely understand that some people prefer to view it uncritically or to take what good they can find in it and leave the rest. It was reading the vast number of meta posts others within the anti-Ragnarok community here have penned that really opened my eyes to just how offensively flawed this film is. In the past few years, I have gone from uncritically loving Ragnarok to despising the movie with every fiber of my being.

Travel anywhere within the Marvel fandom on social media—be it Tumblr, Twitter or elsewhere—and you will inevitably find incredulous people asking, “Why do Loki fans hate Ragnarok so much??” With respect to the people posing such questions, our reasons are numerous and well-documented—perhaps nowhere moreso than in this masterpost. If answers are what you truly seek, you will find them below.

To be rather blunt about it, Thor: Ragnarok was an objectively insulting and out-of-character deviation from established canon. It dropped character arcs left and right; it misrepresented itself as anti-imperialist when its messaging was mixed at best; its brand of humour was immature, bullying and albeist; and it sought to actively punish and demean one character over any other: Loki. I know how conspiratorial and ridiculous that sounds, believe me. But if you stick around until the end, you will see how and why a certain portion of the fandom has arrived at that conclusion. I promise it is not coming from nowhere. Ragnarok’s Loki was a caricature, done in bad faith—and I can prove it.

Through this collection of meta-analyses, I will attempt to illustrate how and why Thor: Ragnarok was a slap in the face to Tom Hiddleston, Loki’s longtime fans, and basically every writer and director who worked so hard to create the three-dimensional, complex antihero we came to know and love over the past decade of the MCU. One part of demonstrating this betrayal by Marvel Studios will be to explicitly detail who Loki had shown himself to be from his introduction in Thor (2011) all the way through to The Dark World. We will then be directly contrasting this Loki with that of Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok—so as to illustrate that these are not different facets of one individual character (a claim often echoed within pro-Ragnarok circles), but rather that Waititi’s “Loki” is often in direct conflict with the version that Tom Hiddleston and Kenneth Branagh built from the ground up. Additionally, we will be looking at how Thor: Ragnarok as we know it came to exist, as well as breaking down direct quotes from Tom Hiddleston, Taika Waititi, Chris Hemsworth and more—with a special focus on the precise nature of where Loki has come from and how his experiences have shaped who he has become.

One final note: I recognise that this page can be rather abrasive to read for those who love Ragnarok. While I’ve tried to tone that down somewhat in my more recent edits of its contents, there is a reason I made the initial choice to write it in the style I did. Critics of Ragnarok are frequently accused of either wanting everything to be deadly serious all the time or of simply not understanding Waititi’s particular brand of irreverent humour. I hope the irony of my creative decision here is not lost on anyone—because it was entirely intentional.

There's a chance that for the reason posted in one of my previous blogs tonight that I might not sleep well and will end up scrolling.

I don't have a huge following but if any mutuals (or even if we're not mutuals!) who love Loki see this and you feel like you want to join in, could you post one of your favourite images of Tom Hiddleston's Loki? I'll start...

I've posted this one before and a few of us have this one as an icon or header, which I know it must get confusing but there's a reason so many of us picked it, it's just such a lovely look for him (even though he's in prison for 4000 years and that very much isn't lovely.) His prison clothes aren't even my favourite costume of his but I have to admit, overall it was a great look. Even though I have my definite favourite Loki era in the MCU I won't place any restrictions on this. I think I just want to look at him and try to stop my brain thinking about my kitchen.

while this is an absolutely great take on this issue, and i completely understand you frustration with the showrunners for royally screwing up our favorite character (as we probably all do on this side of the fandom), i would like to quickly remind the class of that time tom mentioned in an interview that he only had ~5% input in the series despite being an executive producer who should've had much more power (i really wish that i was able to find the picture of it that i had found as a source but i've somehow lost it in my files).

i personally cannot find it in myself to blame him for the destruction of his character because he has shown in multiple instances how much he cares about loki and his story (see his knowledge of loki in the comics as well as his understanding of norse mythology, especially compared to the rest of the cast in the thor movies alone). all of the issues that have occurred after 2013 usually can be directly connected back to the writers fundementally misunderstanding (or just not giving a fuck about) loki, or the director changing things last minute to make him look bad - as op said above about nerfing and deleting crucial scenes for his character, even since the very first movie.

as i previously said, your feelings on the matter are completely valid, and i respect your opinion. however, based on the information that i have as a fan (because we will likely never know about all of the decisions that went into this), it is unfair to be blaming tom for decisions that were originally out of his hands, or even ones that were taken away from him.

Tom was cast via Kenneth Branagh and yes it was PHENOMENAL casting but let's not pretend like Marvel Studios didn't spend the next near-decade and a half deleting Loki's scenes, killing him then instantly reviving him, deleting yet more of his scenes, killing him again, retconning killing him, sticking him off-screen for almost half a decade, removing yet another scene and not even compensating his fans with a DVD extra, killing him again, then suddenly remembering he's popular (again) and coming up with something to use a now-for-real-dead character as the lead but it wasn't exactly the same character (just another version of him) and now they're apparently done with him again when it's pretty obvious he'll be wheeled out of that tree at some point.

I love Loki. I love Tom's portrayal of Loki but the only people who have consistently genuinely seemed to care about the character are the fans. Because we've been given nothing but crumbs by Marvel and yet produce all this beautiful fan art, fan fic and meta. Marvel have just kinda stumbled around Loki like some perpetually confused pigeon in a hall of mirrors that keeps crashing into its own reflection shrugging "huh...what IS this? Ooh shiny!"

Knew what they were doing? More like lucked out with a very talented and charismatic actor and a dedicated fanbase that formed 2011-12 and is somehow, despite everything still here.

Sanctuary and Loki's "adoption"

I can’t believe I didn’t think of this before now, but… Odin said he found Loki in the temple in Jotunheimr. Of course that didn’t fit very well with his claim of Loki being abandoned there, buutt…

What if the Jotun had some concept like the old Christian “Sanctuary”, in which holy places were refuges where even the bitterest enemy could not touch you or force you out? (Not without risking their soul, as the lore had it.) Even when babies were abandoned to sanctuary it was specifically so they would not die, so that they would be kept safe until a home was found for them.

If that’s the case, then the explanation for Loki being there could have been totally different from what Odin claimed: he could have been put there in hopes of keeping him safe. In the midst of an attack by bitter foes like the Aesir such a move would make perfect sense, the only flaw being the assumption that the Aesir would know and respect the sanctuary.

If that was true, then the best case scenario for Odin is that he found baby Loki and just didn’t know Jotun custom enough to understand why the infant was there. It would show a woeful lack of knowledge of their enemies’ customs, but sadly it’s not very farfetched that he might be so ignorant of their culture, considering the blatant contempt many Asgardians exhibited toward frost giants.

Unfortunately it’s more likely he did know (witness the fact that he knew whose child Loki was) and simply took the child anyway.

So if the Jotun rules are anything like the old church rules - which they’d pretty well have to be just to make the sanctuary concept work - then going in the temple and taking Loki out of it was one of the vilest things Odin could do. Even on the scale of war crimes it would be, well, monstrous.

Yet we’re supposed to believe that Loki is the monster in the House of Odin?

LET'S TALK ABOUT LOKI'S SHOES (ACTUALLY, HIS WHOLE WARDROBE)

Production costs aside, clothes tell the audience about how characters think of themselves.

Loki's shoes in the S2 finale raised a lot eyebrows, but I find them quite fitting: they are comfortable, practical, and most importantly, they are humble. The camera brings this to our attention to communicate his evolution in character.

Loki has always dressed well, often times ostentatiously. Whether he is at war, passing as a Midgardian, or held captive as an Asgardian prisoner, Loki communicates his social class and sense of superiority through clothing. For him, clothing armors his fragile sense of self and against others' opinions of him. He intends to be perceived as deadly charming but ultimately unapproachable.

His attire in the first Thor movie is roughly equal parts green and gold, signifying his royal status. His style is dressed down for his brother's misadventures in Jotenheim, yet overall both silhouettes are lofty, princely, but not hardened or threatening.

In Avengers, Loki's look has more black and leather, with exaggerated emphasis on his shoulders meant to intimidate as he assumes the role of villain. The silhouette is very hard, heavy, and edgy. Gold detailing is prevalent as well. Combined with the goat's helm, this is Loki's most pretentious outfit, which speaks to an undercurrent of low self-esteem and a compulsive need to impress. There's no mistaking he is the main antagonist of the story.

In Thor 2, Loki's attire is similar to Avengers but the overcoat is exchanged for a less bulky version (perhaps conveying he is less guarded now that the effects of the Mind Stone are no longer influencing him). Loki's role likewise pivots from the harsh lines of a villain to the more flexible edges of a reluctant villain-turned-ally. This aligns with his character arc when he protects both Jane and Thor, seemingly sacrificing himself.

In Thor 3, Loki's silhouette is streamlined even further. The overcoat is done away with in favor of what appears to be a leather doublet, pauldrons, and vambraces. Gold accents are minimal. While stylish, Loki's attire is more practical than showy, and his helm serves the dual purpose of protection as well as weaponry. At this point in his arc, Loki has become a full antihero, joining his brother's side in rescuing as many Asgardians as possible, and eventually dying in a vain bid to protect Thor from Thanos.

The TVA does something very fun and interesting in taking away Loki's ability to dress himself. Since Loki cannot use his magic in the TVA, he is forced to wear the same clothing as his captor/advocate, who eventually becomes his best friend and peer.

Perhaps, on a subconscious level, this helped Loki to feel included. We know by his pwn admission that Loki fears being alone and desperately craves a sense of belonging. At the same time, he intentionally dresses to put people at a distance, thereby protecting himself from potential rejection at the cost of isolating himself further.

When Mobius gives him that TVA jacket for the first time, Loki seems uncharacteristically pleased. It is not an attractive jacket by any means, yet he neither scoffs at it nor refuses to wear it. Instead, Loki puts it on and is content when Mobius says it looks "smart" on him. He continues to dress like Mobius and, indeed, mimic some of his mannerisms such as placing his hands on his hips. Without clothing meant to push people away, Loki opens up, has more fun, and makes friends.

Loki's choice of attire as he assumes the mantle of God of Stories (and time) is fascinating. Setting aside the clear design inspiration from the comics, Loki's silhouette is soft, remarkably so. His colors are earthy hues of green, and the only bit of flare are the light gold trimming and crown. The look brings to mind the garb of sages and wise wizards rather than royalty or warriors. He's powerful yet approachable because there is humility in his bearing. And that humility springs from a well of healthy self-worth, self-love, and a deep love for others.

The shoes are not meant to be attractive. They are meant to help him ascend the throne, nothing more.

it is appalling to me how impossible it is to talk to my parents about the palestinian-israeli war. my dad is catholic irishman, and my mom is ashkenazi jewish from poland. i am an only child. we are agnostic. both sides of my family have experienced genocide.

one of my relatives in ireland once had a hatchet thrown at him for being catholic, my grandad was once fired after less than three hours on a job because they found out he is catholic. my great-grandma on my mom's side is the only known survivor of the holocaust in my family.

yet, as soon as the palestinian-israeli war started, such historical context was tossed aside in order to put "democracy" up on a pillar.

i am angry, i am sad, and i just wish that there were people out there that i could talk with who would understand me and my views.
