I LIVE for middle class Steve bc he’s an Outsider. He’s an outsider to the Insiders (The Socs) and an outsider to the Outsiders (The greasers) and no matter what he does he’ll never be FULLY accepted by either side (in his opinion)

ok this is a totally out there idea but what if steve was raised by soc parents and became a greaser?

i mean, his dad gives him five dollars literally every time he wants to apologize. money used to be able to bribe anyone in mr. randle’s eyes. his son’s no different to him. secondly, i’m pretty sure it says steve has his own car? and total speculation, again, but maybe that was an apology gift too from his dad. steve was brought up thinking money healed everything because that’s how his dad apologized to him. when he befriended sodapop, he was introduced to the gang, and despite the differences in their money, their stories were awful similar, bad he felt like he had more in common with the rest of the east side rather than anyone on the west side. he didn’t care what anyone thought, he’d be a greaser if it meant having a family who actually cared about him.

realistically, i think steve would be middle class at best, but i think this would make for a good au.

Vietnam au but Ponyboy moved into an apartment with Cathy when he was 19, while Soda was off at war (Steve too), but the entire plot of the fanfic is scences of Soda and Steve writing letters or Ponyboy falling in a deep depression since everything seems to have gone to shit. Even if he’d gotten his shit togther and had a job he enjoyed, a writer. He was making decent money for it too, and Cathy, trying to enjoy her marriage while the world seemed to erupt into even a little bit, but still chaos, dancing with her husband couldn’t dance away the pain from it.
