Writing X Characters When You Aren’t X, A Masterlist

Writing x Characters When You Aren’t x, A Masterlist

x: a variable used to represent something unknown.

We’ve seen an influx of questions about how to write stories based around characters of color, disability, non-binary, etc. when the author does not fall into these categories. Rather than have these posts take over the site, we’ve decided to compile a list of resources to help our fellow writers become more educated about writing what they do not immediately know. However, this list is not the end-all-be-all of knowledge; one should always try to learn from someone with first hand experience in any topic. The world is constantly growing and changing, and because of that, there will always be more to learn. The admins at Plotline Hotline want to help writers form respectful, informed, and realistic characters that broaden the narrow range we see in literature today.

*Be wary that some of the topics listed below contain sensitive material. Reader discretion is advised.*

As always, the links I found to be especially apt will be in bold. Topics are listed alphabetically, excepting the “other” section.

A Guide To Exploring Abandoned Churches

If you go alone, don’t bring a flashlight. You’ll see things you don’t want to.

Don’t bring groups bigger than 12.

Bring water and some snacks, but no wine.

If you have to sleep there, sleep in the sanctuary, but not on a pew.

If you try to read the hymnal, the words won’t be english anymore.

The Bibles will be blank until you confess.

Don’t go into the confession booth. The man talking to you is not the priest, and you don’t want to know what he really is.

The cross on the wall changes locations, don’t look at it for too long.

If you see someone praying at the altar, don’t approach them. If they approach you, don’t talk to them. Leave immediately.

If you hear the organ playing while you’re in the basement, know that your time is running out.

If it plays while you’re in the sanctuary, your time is up.

Take whatever you want, but if you find that one of your possesions is missing, don’t look for it. Let them have it. It’s not worth your life.

If you find a rosary, don’t put it on. It won’t help.

The water isn’t holy anymore. Throwing it on the demons in the shadows won’t work.

Drink the wine if you wish to never leave.

Don’t get seperated from your friends.

If you spend the night, leave at sunrise otherwise you’ll enter another plane of reality with no way back.

If you don’t spend the night, leave through the doors you came in.

You might look behind you after leaving and see that the church isn’t there anymore. It means that they took what they wanted.

Never enter the same abandoned church twice. Even (especially) if you forgot something inside. That’s a lure. On your second tour through, they will know enough about you to keep you there.

Dark Academia community repeat after me:

“Dark Academia is an aesthetic that revolves around classic literature, the pursuit of self-discovery, and a general passion for knowledge and learning” NOT ELITIST SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE it means anyone if any class background, any ability can be part of the aesthetic/community as long as they has a passion for self education and knowledge

Personally I think the aesthetic is inherently about being poor and gay: it’s about entering spaces that were originally closed to us and wearing the clothes typical to the “educated rich man”. I could write literal books of essays on this topic in specific

From A Guardian Article By Arundhati Roy About The Covid Crisis In India Titled ‘We Are Witnessing

from a Guardian article by Arundhati Roy about the covid crisis in India titled ‘We are witnessing a crime against humanity’. it’s a free read and it’s also an excellent good read for anyone who wants to understand the magnitude of the issue and how deeprooted it is because it isn’t just the virus it’s a number of things that’s wrong with the entire system of government. the leading party is at fault and it has been for multiple years now for more crimes and human rights violations than it’s even possible to imagine. so please take 5 mins out of your day and read it, i promise you it’s worthwhile.

Get Ready To Launch America!

Get Ready To Launch America!

A new era of human spaceflight is about to begin. American astronauts will once again launch on an American rocket from American soil to the International Space Station as part of our Commercial Crew Program! NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will fly on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, lifting off on a Falcon 9 rocket at 4:32 p.m. EDT May 27, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, for an extended stay at the space station for the Demo-2 mission.

image

As the final flight test for SpaceX, this mission will validate the company’s crew transportation system, including the launch pad, rocket, spacecraft and operational capabilities. This also will be the first time NASA astronauts will test the spacecraft systems in orbit.

image

Behnken and Hurley were among the first astronauts to begin working and training on SpaceX’s next-generation human space vehicle and were selected for their extensive test pilot and flight experience, including several missions on the space shuttle.

image

Behnken will be the joint operations commander for the mission, responsible for activities such as rendezvous, docking and undocking, as well as Demo-2 activities while the spacecraft is docked to the space station.

image

Hurley will be the spacecraft commander for Demo-2, responsible for activities such as launch, landing and recovery.

image

Lifting off from Launch Pad 39A atop a specially instrumented Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon will accelerate its two passengers to approximately 17,000 mph and put it on an intercept course with the International Space Station. In about 24 hours, Crew Dragon will be in position to rendezvous and dock with the space station. The spacecraft is designed to do this autonomously but astronauts aboard the spacecraft and the station will be diligently monitoring approach and docking and can take control of the spacecraft if necessary.

image

The Demo-2 mission will be the final major step before our Commercial Crew Program certifies Crew Dragon for operational, long-duration missions to the space station. This certification and regular operation of Crew Dragon will enable NASA to continue the important research and technology investigations taking place onboard the station, which benefits people on Earth and lays the groundwork for future exploration of the Moon and Mars starting with the agency’s Artemis program, which will land the first woman and the next man on the lunar surface in 2024.

EDVARD MUNCH (4/10)

Madonna (1894) :

EDVARD MUNCH (4/10)

“From my rotting body flowers shall grow, and I am in them, and that is eternity.”

EDVARD MUNCH (4/10)

"Nothing ceases to exist – there is no example of this in nature. There is an entire mass of things that cannot be rationally explained. There are newborn thoughts that have not yet found form. How foolish to deny the existence of the soul. After all, that a life has begun, that cannot be denied. It is necessary to believe in immortality, in so far as it can be demonstrated that the atoms of life or the spirit of life must continue to exist after the body’s death. But of what does it exist, this characteristic of holding a body together, causing matter to change and develop, this spirit of life? I felt it as a sensual delight that I should become one with – become this earth which is forever radiated by the sun in such a constant ferment and which lives – lives – and which will grow plants from my decaying body – trees and flowers – and the sun will warm them and I will exist in them – and nothing will perish – and that is eternity."

Edvard Munch used the term 'The Frieze of Life' to describe a number of his main motives that developed during the 1890s. He characterised the frieze as "a poem about love, anxiety and death".

MADONNA, here in a version from 1894, is one of the most famous paintings from The Frieze of Life. Madonna portrays "ecstasy and pain in the act of love".

Revealing his ideas about the primal connections between

PLEASURE & DANGER, LIFE & DEATH,

Munch described Madonna as the climactic “pause when the world stops revolving…Your lips, as red as ripening fruit, gently part as if in pain. Now the hand of death touches life. The chain is forged that links the thousand families that are dead to the thousand generations to come.”

Happy Eid Fitr to all my dear muslim followers🌙

I know that this year's ramadan has been very challenging as mosques were closed and in a month of unity, meeting with friends and family just wasn't possible. I am very sorry you will not be able to celebrate Eid as you usually do because everyone is working hard to maintain social distancing. I heard that many muslims were kindly helping and donating more generously during that holy month, to that, as a citizen of the world going against a global pandemic, I am very thankful. I hope you will keep staying safe and want to tell you that better days will come.

hello there! i’m a new writeblr joining the community and even though it’s a bit nerve-racking, the whole point of this blog is to push myself, so here goes.

my name is ayla, i’m 21, queer and a creative writing student in london. i typically write ya/na fantasy and romance and i have way too many active projects at the moment. my mother tongue is german so i grew up writing lots in german but when i was about 14 i really fell in love with the english language and i have always written in english since.

i have a habit of procrastinating and not writing when i actually should be. i really want to use this blog to write more, ideally daily, even if it’s just some ramblings about my day. i also want to attempt nanowrimo for the first time ever this year and want to write about my experience and progress. i want to be able to come back to this blog in the future and see how much i’ve grown as a writer and to share my journey.

i will post mainly my writing, moodboards, inspiration and hopefully the odd bit of writing advice (although i’m not sure i feel qualified to give out advice just yet).

i don’t have many writer friends so i’d love to get to know new people! if you’re another writeblr, reblog this and i’ll follow you! i follow from my personal blog @chamilsanya. thanks!
