I ended a call with my cousin ,who was currently in London for an indeterminate time, because my food was burning. I forgot I left the lasagna on the oven for over an hour and once I opened the kitchen’s door there was a cloud of smoke coming straight to my face.
“Shit. Shit. Shit.“ I said taking the container out of the oven, burning my thumb in the process. After shoving the burnt lasagna on the counter, I headed straight to the bathroom to take care of the small burnt area. Luckily it wasn’t a big deal, just a fright. I put a Cars bandaid that (Y/N) made me buy in case something happened.
(Y/N).
She is a peculiar girl who deserves it better than she has. She has beautiful (Y/H/C) which half of the time is tied on a messy bun. She also has these beautiful blue eyes which most of the time red and puffy because of crying. Crying for different reasons. Sometimes because of the death of her family on a car accident three years ago, which killed her parents and little brother, letting her be the only survivor. A scar goes from her knee to the side of her leg. A constant reminder that she got away on the tragedy but her family didn’t.
But other times she would cry for a complete other reason. With her parents death the only family she had left was his dad’s brother. An alcoholic man. So this last three years were a mess for her. Being a maid to him, serving as his punch bag when he had high levels of alcohol on his blood, etcetera.
That’s where I come in.
We have been best friends since Middle school. She is a year younger than me and recently graduated high school whereas I did last year. She says I’m her last string holding her up. Two years ago I started noticing small bruises in her arms and legs, so naturally, I asked her what whas going on. She told me everything and we became even more close. I thought a million times on doing something about it, but if I told the authorities, (Y/N) would be taken away from my side. And if I took the matter onto my own hands I would en up getting hurt. I didn’t mind about it, but she did.
As I stared at the bandaid wrapped around my finger a loud constant knock on my front door was heard. I jumped a little. The knocking was still present. I ran down the stairs, opened the door, and was engulfed on a hug.
I hugged him. That’s the first thing that came to my mind. My tears bluring my vision. The second my body met his, I broke down. Lost my strength. My legs stopped working. I was a crying mess. He let the both of us fall on the floor, hugging me tightly against his chest. My clothing was a case appart. I ran all the way down from my uncle’s house to his in only a pair of gym shorts and a bra. I still couldn’t believe it.
“Wh- what.. what happened?”He worriedly asked when he noticed my lack of clothing. “Why are you on a bra? Where’s your shirt?” I covered myself. Wrapped my arms against my chest. Brought my legs to myself. This action only made me cry harder, remembering what just happened.
“Whe-where were y-you?” I cried.
“What are you talking about? I was here the whole time” It broke him to see me like this. Never had he ever seen me on this state. So broken. So fragile. So vulnerable.
“Your pho-phone” I whispered this time.
Fuck.
“(Y/N).. I… was talking to my.. to my cousin. “He explained but quickly added “what the hell happened?” The sobbing got louder. The pain on my chest unbearable. He then proceeded to try and grab me bridal style, but I just screamed and covered my ears, remembering his touch. He got scared but didn’t let go of me.
“W-we need to l-leave, Lucas. Please.” I begged.
“I want you to explain me what happened. Besides: we can’t leave. What would your friends say? Your uncle. He would get really mad-“ he was cut off by my words.
“He touched me. He touched me, Lucas.” I cried harder. By this point The neighbors might have called the police. He just stared. A mixture of pain and shock.
“What?”
“He… he almost raped me. Please. We need to get out of here. He is coming for me. “ I begged hiding my head on his chest and taking a handful of his shirt.
“How- where is he?” Anger taking over him. “How did you make it out?” He sat on his bed, laying me on his lap and hldimg me close to him.
“I hit him with a b-bottle” I explained inhaling his scent. It always helped me calm down.
After a few seconds of silence he got up and tossed me to the side, leaving me on a sitting position. He grabbed a hoodie and handed it to me. Then started to pack some things onto a suitcase. We were leaving. That made me smile a little. But the image of my uncle forcing my shirt off and touching me made me tear up.
Goodbye blue house
Goodbye red door
Abandoned bars where we would drink on weekends
There’s magnets pulling from the ocean.
I can’t forget the way she looked at me when we were leaving. We had been planning a road trip to the west coast for a long time. The only thing stopping us was (Y/N)’s studies. But now there’s nothing holding us back.
We started the drive to California.
Where it’s warmer.
To start a new life.
I’m gonna miss Ohio
but this time we’re gonna make it right.
As I look to my side I see a wide awake (Y/N). Counting crows through the tears on her blue eyes.
I place one hand on her lap, Just over her scar, caressing it. She simply looks down at my hand and places her own over mine, palm against the back of mine, interwining our fingers together. I give her a reassuring smile.
An hour into the trip she is sound asleep. Tear stains on her cheeks. Puffy eyes.
It started to rain. Something that often happened in Ohio. A small grin appeared on my lips as i thought to myself:
I’m gonna miss Ohio, but I’m not gonna miss the rain
So as I’m trying to find a station on the radio.
I know everything is gonna be beter on the west coast.
Better that the mess we left back home.
I’m sorry, this isn’t Jojo at all but I think I’ve had it for today. As a pharmacy tech, I’m tired of hearing “Well, I started to feel better so I didn’t finish them.” I always knew this but now as a Molecular and Cellular Biology major, I not only know why but how. If you’re willing to heed my advice from the title, good; be on your way. If you need to know more, keep reading.
But in an infection, you already have resistant bacteria lurking. Not taking antibiotics doesn’t literally create resistant bacteria. So how, then, do the antibiotics take care of the resistant ones?
A lot of antibiotics aren’t bacterialcidal: They don’t actually kill them. Many inhibit growth by some mechanism depending if the bacterium is gram negative or gram positive. For example, penicillin inhibits growth by disrupting the formation of a peptidoglycan layer on gram positive bacteria. Others target the LPS layer on gram negative ones. This keeps the non resistant bacteria at bay. So what kills the resistant ones? Your immune system. Antibiotics buy time and energy for your immune system to recognize and destroy the resistant strains. Your immune system is intelligent in that sense and can form antibodies for new illnesses. It’s important to give your immune system this time because bacteria grow, mutate, and transfer genetic material at astonishing rates. If you wanted to look at a microcosm of the mechanics that go into evolution, you’ve got it with bacteria.
There are three methods aside from binary fission in which they transfer genes (I won’t get into the minutia of the form of informational material): Transformation, transduction and conjugation.
In transformation, a bacterium can pickup lost genes from a ruptured and dead cell.
Transduction is a way to transfer information via a viral vector.
In conjugation, genes are transferred through something called a pilus: It’s a bridge between two cells that pipes a copy of the information from one cell to another receptive cell and is the only method that doesn’t involve killing either cells. Resistant bacteria like to give around that resistance information like they’re burning a CD for their friends.
So please finish your antibiotics if you’ve been given them. It doesn’t matter if you’ve started to feel better or even great. Finish them.
(Hey science people, If I’ve missed anything or even got something wrong, help me out. There’s obviously lengthy stuff I’ve left out but I think I got the basics).
Depression isn’t a hot teenager with a secret depression and their crush suddenly falling for them and healing their wounds as quickly as they came. Self harm isn’t a beautiful girl with scars on her wrist with a beautiful boy kissing them saying she’s still beautiful. Anxiety isn’t stuffing your face against the person you love’s chest while they pat your head and tell you it’ll be okay. Depression is constantly believing you’ll never be saved, thinking you deserve to die and no one will ever care. Self harm is hot water stinging your body and scars and blood pouring as you cry. Anxiety is feeling like the world is crashing around you and you can’t even seem to breathe or talk from the way that people look at you for even just a second. Don’t make it seem like a beautiful reality. Don’t make it seem like it’s a good thing to have it. This is not a fairytale where your mental illnesses get you a good love life. These are sicknesses that can kill people within themselves. For everyone’s sake, PLEASE don’t make them seem like a good thing. Because it’s a goddamn nightmare.
please. (via lookfortomorrow)

Continuing in the vein of snow leopards being the most extra cats ever, here’s mom Kira being “surprised” by one of her cubs. Sisters Naphisa and Pandora were born at the Stone Zoo on May 6th. Since those videos of big cats “over-reacting” to being pounced by their cubs are so popular, I asked where this behavior comes from - are they really hamming it up, or is it genuine surprise? One of Kira’s zookeepers noted it looks a lot like her normal play behaviors, so there’s a good chance it’s one of her ways of playing with her cubs. Since most play behaviors are crucial to teaching baby animals the skills they’ll need to survive as adults, it makes sense that snow leopard play would include stalking and pouncing!

We hope to inspire people to live a better life, help them build self-esteem, create and maintain healthy relationships with family and friends, make them smile, and give them useful information worth sharing with their loved ones.
