The thing about ADHD is that the "lack of reward chemicals in your brain" doesn't just mean that you don't want to do any tasks that don't feel particularly yummy :(, it means that your brain will look at chores and tasks that need to be done like "doing this would be painful and tedious for absolutely nothing to gain from it, Do Not Do That." The same thing that your brain tells you about everything else that would feel really bad and hurt the entire time that you're dying. The part of your brain that stops you from doing the thing is the same part that keeps you from shoving your arm into a wood chipper.

With unmedicated, unmanaged ADHD, "I have to do this assignment or I fail and my life will be ruined and I die" feels like a SAW trap, every single time.

Thoughts for a do-not-disturb sign I need as goth with ADHD:

A sign that says, "Already disturbed: leave me alone" for days when I need to be left alone to work, and on the flip side, it reads, "Already disturbed: come on in."

Bonus points if it's shaped like a bat.

the beautiful thing about ADHD is it can take you down many paths. within minutes you might go from checking if there's any holidays soon to discovering a national holiday to raise awareness for a little known disease and then suddenly you're spending your morning down a wikipedia rabbithole and you're rapidly experiencing the joys of learning and connecting the pieces of the universe together and entering a higher state of enlightened being. or at least having fun.

the horrible thing about ADHD is all that's nothing but a useless distraction from your REAL purpose in life: being a capitalist drone

There are no disabilities which are raised above ableism. The person in the wheelchair, the autistic person, the person with schizophrenia and the person with an invisible chronic illness may all experience society's ableism in different ways, but none of them can expect to avoid it. So the "you wouldn't say X to Y" advocacy needs to retire yesterday. They say all kinds of ableist shit to all of us and it's time to try out some actual solidarity instead of arguing about who has it slightly worse

extremely fucked up that one of the symptoms of adhd is forgetfulness and difficulty sticking to habits and schedules and one of the best ways to alleviate those symptoms is by remembering to take a pill every morning at the same time

my thing with vampires doesn't even have the decency to be one of those childhood obsessions ("I roleplayed warrior cats on the playground and now I have a cat fursona" "I used to think I was a wizard as an undiagnosed nd kid and now I'm all about gandalf big naturals"), this happened to me in my early teens. it's barely even an academic interest, I got there eventually but I had to deliberately shoehorn it into my major. it's not even something respectable like a kink or other sick and twisted sexual perversion. no, this is something far, far worse.

The idea that being autistic is now “trendy” and a diagnosis can give you social clout is so laughably divorced from reality. I can assure you that beyond Extremely Online Niche Communities, autism is still incredibly stigmatized. You can lose custody battles over your children or be coerced into a conservatorship based on an autism diagnosis in America in 2024, “Autistic” is still very much used as an insult among edgy teens, and I’m seeing the r-slur have a bit of a resurgence. I, an autistic adult, am afraid to tell employers about my diagnosis lest my superiors treat me like a child or decide that I’m not a “culture fit” and fire me. There are still “treatment” centers that use electric shocks on their autistic charges, and autistic students die in “quiet rooms” (aka solitary for disabled kids) at schools or end up being murdered outright by their caregivers for being “too much”. In many scenarios, it is unpleasant or unsafe to be visibly autistic, and the idea that people are somehow gaining “clout” with their autism diagnoses is a gigantic slap in the face to the many autistic people who are being subjected to horrific ableism right now.

Neurodivergent alt kids joking about “Autistic Rizz” on The Clock App do not an accepting mainstream society make. Please go outside.

One thing that I really don’t love about the online autism community is the way that some people in it like to push back against stereotypes by insisting that no autistic people actually fit these stereotypes ever, period, end of. I see things like “being in IT”, “liking geeky stuff” and stimming in more stigmatized ways (ie. rocking and hand flapping) harped on a lot.

As an autistic programmer who stims by rocking when particularly overwhelmed and enjoys stereotypically geeky things, this is incredibly othering.

“Stereotypical” autistic people aren’t the problem: NTs making broad assumptions about all autistic people are.

autism allies (and even a substantial number of autistic people) when you tell them your autism-induced picky eating is not “picky eating” but is in fact an eating disorder that you can’t magically get over in the next 5 seconds:

"My favourite aspect of Halloween is the playlists, where people clearly add songs like Zombie by the Cranberries on name alone, so at parties it goes Monster Mash, Rocky Horror, Beautiful Elegy About Intergenerational Trauma of English Violence Against Ireland, then Thriller"

A girl is looking at an assortment of clothes in the window of a shop called "Batz 'n Stuff". She says, "what kind of goth should I be???". An apparently nude man nearby, weeping dramatically, replies, "any kind baby please".

I walked past a goth shop today and it looked really cool so here's a drawing about a goth shop :-)

i love anathema

i think as a fandom we do not give anathema enough credit. first off. - my girl has a PhD at nineteen

- that's right, it's Dr. Anathema Device

- she carries a foot-long knife on her at all times

- her bike is called Phaeton. a phaeton is a type of carriage. it has two horses and an open roof

- her first word was nice, her second was accurate. her first sentence was this:

I tell ye thif, and I charge ye with my wordes. Four shalle ryde, and Four shalle alfo ryde, and Three sharl ryde the Skye as twixt, and Wonne shal ryde in flames; and theyr shall be no stopping themme: not fish, nor rayne, nor rode, neither Deville nor Angel. And ye shalle be theyr alfo, Anathema.

- she spells like it's the 1600s

- she looks 'vivacious' idek abt that one

- she drew on the title page of the Book. she DREW in THE NICE AND ACCURATE PROPHECIES OF AGNES NUTTER.

- I can't do better than the actual quote for this one:

"Other members of the family had said that Agnes made things obscure to conceal them from the understanding of outsiders; Anathema, who suspected she could occasionally think like Agnes, had privately decided that it was because Agnes was a bloody-minded old bitch with a mean sense of humor."

- she's an actual witch

- she's nineteen? like my girl is doing all that at NINETEEN.

- when she loses The Book she methodically looks for it, then chaotically looks for it, then melodramatically falls to her knees and bemoans the situation then looks around because DRAMATIC STRUCTURE dictates The Book should be there

Thanks for coming to my ted talk, Yours, an anathema fan.
