my brother got covid because he's a college professor and there's not much he can do to mitigate exposure when he has 200+ students per lecture. he's got a baby at home, so he does his best, but.
the governmental website for covid information is now propaganda. not a joke, not hyperbole, not an exaggeration: it's genuinely the definition of propaganda. this is biased misinformation determined to push a political stance. it is being hosted on a government server. it looks like something you'd find in a "top 10 weird internet conspiracy stories (and their origins)" youtube video.
my brother called me when he saw it. he had me type it into google. for a second i legitimately thought that i had typed something wrong. we have both taught college: we have both said "a .gov site is usually a reliable resource." i just stared at my phone for a long, long time.
i thought about how when i was a kid, conspiracy theories were mostly fun and a little spooky. unserious. i remember reading some long, complicated website about how avril lavigne is dead. how bigfoot is real. it used to be funny-and-a-joke.
over seven million people (globally) have died from covid. america has the highest death rate with over 1.2 million people.
the thing is - every time a person dies from something like a mass shooting or poverty or treatable illness - we are told don't make it political. we are told it's just something that can happen. we are told it's sad but what can you do!

nothing is going to happen. nobody's gonna, like, do anything about it. it's a thursday today, and we are just going to move on from this like we have been moving on from everything else.
yesterday my brother was outside walking his dog, mask included. a guy in a truck pulls up and shouts something about covid and whatever the fuck else. my brother has a good sense of humor, described it to me as enthusiastic! i hadn't ever been catcalled before, this was new and therefore thrilling! i do see why you hate it, though. like. i have actual covid, does he want me to cough on him?
my brother doesn't get extra time off work anymore, because the cdc practically doesn't exist. my brother said i'm not exposing 200 students to covid. his boss shrugged and said: who cares? they're going to get it eventually anyway. like it isn't a pandemic.

Btw they aren't just doing all of the above, they're also putting law firms associated with the Democrats on a blacklist and revoking security clearance; threatening to suspend the broadcast licenses of CBS and NBC; trying to shut down the Democrats' main fundraising platform ActBlue with a spurious lawsuit; and just today the FBI arrested at federal judge *at the courthouse* for not complying with an ICE raid there.
(For those who dont see why this is a problem, ICE are not - or I guess formerly were not - supposed to enter sensitive places like schools and courthouses. FOR GOOD REASON. It will NOT make us safer if people who've been here 12 years with no criminal convictions start skipping out on their court cases.)
Like. However bad you think it is. IT IS WORSE. Luckily the courts aren't letting them get away with all the horrible things they want to do.
I know most people don't care about anything unless it has to do with the U.S. but can we please start talking about the Canadian election.
Please don't vote for Poilievre. He's basically the Canadian Trump and plans to put in place laws that harm trans youth, and lots of other shit.

How many detainees do we have zero proof of life for? How many detainees are children? How many detainees 'fit the profile so they grabbed them anyway'? How many detainees were literally involved in Immigration Court proceedings attempting to become citizens and following the rules, but snatched up by thugs near the court?
How many people have died in airplane crashes? How many have died from measles? How many have died from food poisoning? How many will starve without Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare? How many will die overseas because USAID was cut?
"The Mad King isn't Chairman Mao, he isn't trying to hurt people to weaken our resistance to him dismantling our entire nation and government"- quite the opposite there is zero reason to think this shameless group of criminals, grifters, bigots, and their assembled hate movement aren't trying to enshrine some Christo Fascist White Supremacy version of America, and they have to know they are outnumbered and only fear and terror will let them maintain their grip on power. 4/17 A photo op is arranged to show Abrego is alive, meets with Senator Van Hollen.
4/18 Trump holds up his photoshopped 'translation' of the cartoonish knuckle tattoos, a picture first published from El Salvador Dictator and sketchy cartel affiliate/bitcoin bro Nayib Bukele.
So Let's see- they detain a guy, the case goes to the highest court, and then almost a month later they say 'whelp look at these weird prison tattoos sideways and its totally just like all the members of MS-13 who have MS-13 on their body spelled with the four characters M and S and 1 and 3 the only difference being these tattoos aren't those characters. Bro we knew he was in the gang. And now that he's in our complete control, we didn't tie him down and tattoo some random shit on his knuckles, trust us bro, who would do something like that? Just tattooing markings on a prisoner who was denied legal recourse based on ethnic assumptions? We're not like the last people who famously did that at all- trust us bro. We just waited until the case had been in the highest courts before showing you this totally reliable photo.
Also if you look at his staged photo with the Senator? He's hiding his hands under the table- probably because they just held him down and randomly tattooed him? Regardless if this is just a theory or not- he had been processed and found innocent several times, and this is just some half baked "Fuck the Constitution, America has a King now, and we can hurt whoever we want, yeehaw racism is amazing again" motherfuckery. But for my money that photo op is a picture of a guy forced to dress like a fucking tourist and experiencing body horror after having been marked up by fucking monsters, all because he wanted to send at least one last message to his wife and child.
And if you think any of that benefits America in any positive way, I hope you fucking drink bleach, and chase it down with horse wormer, and I hope you get every cruel perverted nonsensical whimsy the Mad King can cook up.
