The theme was hairstyle/bandana so I guess hmm I just really... wanted to paint hair going from normal to fire, and it seemed people really wanted him to appear so here uh.. he is with his mohawk :girlhelp: Thank you Cyn for setting this all up, its been incredibly fun to see everyone have fun with this and it somehow just ended with everyone exploring so it was a good treat !

BEGINNING || PREVIOUS || NEXT (SOON) MASTER POST

Man oh man, this one was way messier and off model than my last few updates but whatever, we got to keep this ball rolling! Life's been crazy so I've had to take some unwanted breaks in between updates. Thanks everyone for your patience as always!

One thing I wanted in this flashback was to really get a sense of how the brothers worked as an experienced team with Leo at the helm as a proper leader. It's something we never got to see much of in Rise and I felt it was important to include since half the team is already gone by the time of Replica. Team Dynamics Ted Talk under the cut!

We know from Casey Jr that Leo stressed the importance of listening to your team. A big part of that also means knowing how to communicate with them in general.

With Michelangelo, he keeps it short and succinct, trusting his brother to know what he's doing when in his element. This trust goes a long way with Mikey, having spent years of his youth as the baby striving for the respect he felt he deserved. Leo knows it's best to not bog Mikey down with details, allowing him to improvise as needed. This unspoken freedom has only grown over time as Mikey has dipped deeper into spiritual arts that, frankly, go completely over Leo's head.

The greatest sacrifice Leo has ever made was read Donnie's Big Book of Bad Guy Codes. While he doesn't remember ALL the numbers, he has memorized the ones that matter and it has helped tremendously in avoiding miscommunication with his genius brother. More importantly it silenced any of Donnie's usual belly-aching. As Leo's "twin"/"equal" the two still butt heads from time to time. Donnie respects his brother's authority (mostly) but will still push the boundaries of what he's allowed on a semi-regular basis. Give Donnie an inch and he will take the mile and then find a loop hole that allows him to go twenty miles more. This is partially due to him often being the one left behind at HQ, making the turtle just a TAD stir crazy. Leo does his best to keep him in line regardless.

Big brother Raph will forever and always be big brother to Leo. As such he holds a place of authority in Leo's heart and is someone he still regularly seeks counsel from in both the ways of leadership and more. Raph is always happy to support his younger brother and does a surprisingly good job (albeit after years of practice) of walking the line so as not to step on his brother's toes in the process. At least not since the secret of "the Key" blew up in their faces several years ago. They don't talk about that anymore. Leo is the leader now and he's done a great job in recent years as far as Raph is concerned. He trusts him to make the right call. The two have a close bond and regularly use mind meld to quickly communicate rather than speak ...this will be important to remember for the future.

Okokokokok- ignore how rough and messy some of these redraws/sketches are - but it's apparently also dinosaur month?? (WHY did no one ever tell me it's Jurassic June? I love dinosaurs) And like. What if Rise but dinosaurs?!

I don't often post such loose sketches but I wanted to show these off cause I really like some of this.

Design choices and dino species + the reasons I picked them bellow (looking for potential Donnie dino suggestions):

Clothes: Without the shell they really need clothes. They'd all have pretty much the same pants to keep some unity, except maybe Mikey (I decided they should all have the same pants after I finished the Mikey sketches, not sure if I'll keep the shorts or change to pants). Accessories are a mix of pre and post finale.

Raph - I think would keep it simple and practical but would also wear nice jackets and stuff when in casual situations. I need to work on giving him an alternative outfit and tweak his accessories a bit.

Donnie - An oversized pull-over hoodie cause we already know he loves that shit. We see him wearing it all the time. Easy enough. He wears a comfortable singlet underneath so the straps of his battle sail don't rub. Nice soft fabric, tight fit so it doesn't move around, tucks it into his pants, etc. When he wears the battle sail he won't overheat so he can wear hoodies basically all year round.

Leo - He's in one of those shirts with obnoxiously large arm holes and make it cropped cause 1. I think he would 2. I want it to be different from Raph and Donnie's singlets. He usually wears the shoulder strap off his shoulder but pulls it up when he needs to. He has some of the black bandages over his mid drift atm but I might just make his pants super high waisted in the final version. He'd probably wear a bomber jacket (also cropped?) over the top for cool weather, but doesn't like to hide his feathers.

Mikey - I think he'd mostly wear hand me downs when he's younger. He definitely goes through a stage of rebelling and wanting to pick his own and would find a middle ground of appreciating sharing some of his brother's clothes and modifying them, as long as he has the choice of his own available. Not sure if that would be before or after this design. At the moment he's got Raph's old shorts (from a loooong time ago), Leo's old shirt, and Donnie's old zip up hoodie. He does have his own accessories though, including pins instead of stickers.

Dinosaurs: I kept them all as non-avian dinosaurs, AKA not including animals that are colloquially considered dinos but aren't (like pterosaurs). I wanted to keep an even split of herbivore vs carnivore just so one wasn't the odd one out. I wanted to keep most of their body structure, colours and distinguishing features the same as canon. Obviously I added tails cause, yeah, of course haha. I did want them to be recognisable as different species of dino using distinct characteristics that their species is known for. I did ignore a lot of differences though, like size and bipedal vs quadruped (although the quadrupeds might be more likely to go to all fours, especially when fighting or afraid). Leo and Donnie are carnivores so have sharper teeth and claws.

Raph - Some kind of Ceratopsian (likely Triceratops or something very similar) and he was the first idea I had for this and I'm really happy with it. I think it just suits him. Trike Raph just came to me in an unprecedented moment of genius. His spikey frill replicates his spikey shell. His sturdiness, protectiveness and willingness to kick ass when needed, all scream trike to me.

Donnie - Spinosaurus but looking for other species recommendations. More details below: So I wanted to figure out a way for him to have tech with a similar function to his battle shell (in the sense that it's something that helped him in day to day life) and so I went with spino cause one possible theory about a function of spinosaurus' sail is temperature regulation. So his battle sail has heating/cooling systems as well as other tech. A spino's sail was probably not fragile but the battle sail would also help protect it from being targeted during fights or crushed during extreme impacts. It was also thought to be used for display, and what's more of a display than a battle sail? The only problem I have with this is that it's lacking part of what makes Donnie's battle shell so great, which is that it is essentially a prosthetic. Not quite the same as how prosthetics are used in people of course, just in the sense that it is replicating the functionality of a body part that he doesn't have (I can't think of a better word). Well he does have a shell but it doesn't function in the same way that his brothers shells do, which leaves him with less defense than they have, hence a big reason for the battle shell (I hope I explained this well, it was hard to try and word properly). I can't think of a good way to do this with dinos. I was thinking of a carno or something with tiny arms, then Donnie could have tech enhanced arms but I'm pretty much ignoring body structure in the others so it would be weird to have just Donnie be affected by a difference in limb structure/functionality. I was thinking prosthetic tail but every non avian dinosaur had a pretty substantial tail. Except therizinosaurus but even they hade pretty obvious tails. I'm open to suggestions for this one if anyone has ideas. It does have to be an extinct non-avian dinosaur (anything not in Avialae), preferably carnivore but if someone suggests a really good herbivore or omnivore then I can try and swap Mikey for a carnivore. I want there to be an even split. I also wanted to give him something different on his face, like his brothers, and that could only be a little spino crest and it crowds the top of his head but I can't put it anywhere else...

Leo - A type of Dromaeosaur. I was tossing up between this and a dilophosaur where his red stripes were part of the dilo's crest, cause I wasn't sure about giving him feathers. But dilo Leo was so plain compared to the rest and the crests were hard to get looking right so I went back to raptor Leo. I can definitely imagine him literally and metaphorically preening his feathers too. You can't really see it but he does also have that big raptor claw. Raptors were smart, tactical and worked in packs so I think that suits him. I wasn't specifically referencing how some artists draw Leo's stripes coming off his face (I was just trying to replicate his stripes somehow, even though it doesn't make a huge amount of sense) but I realised afterwards that it kinda looks like that and might have been subconsciously inspired by it.

Mikey - Is an Ankylosaur. I'm pretty happy with the species but I need to work out the design of his armour plating so that it looks interesting, cool and protective but isn't too chunky, too pointy or super lumpy looking. I went with an anky cause Mikey is often hiding in his shell and he can't do the same here but he could curl up in a defensive ball. Plus I could imagine him using his tail club in his razzmatazz fighting style. A little like his kusari-fundo or nunchacku/nunchucks (not sure on proper wording).

Til Splinter discovered the secret dough rolling technique and on occasion adult Leo will wrap himself in a ball as a self-comforting method when he’s missing his family most.

Trans Leo pride is something I see a lot, but personally, FH Leo wouldn't celebrate his gender. He grew up around Gali, who went through a lot of gender struggles, especially in his younger years, and with the brothers being so accepting, it's just another part of his life

But his lack of romantic attraction? That's something that stands out to him. He sees the brothers with their own attractions and crushes and such and realizes he stands out. He's different. But that's okay because he's still him and he's still valid

anyways~ it's pride month, which means i get to be even more annoying about aro pride ^-^

How to draw TMNT 2012 Part 1 - The Carapace's Shape, Costal & Vertebral Scutes, and Marginal Scutes

Turtle shells are comprised of three main components:

The carapace - the part of the shell on a turtle's back

The plastron - the part of the shell that is on the turtle's front

The bridge - the part on the side that connects the carapace and plastron together

Today, we will be focusing on the carapace of the shell

#1 The Shape

The carapace's shape is essentially an oval. Now, how wide the oval is actually varies between the four turtles. If you look closely, the shape and size of the carapace between Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey isn't exactly the same. But, we will get more into that in a different tutorial

For now, let's just sketch out a generic shell shape that can be used as a base for any 2012 turtle, starting with a basic oval. This will be our "inner ring"

Afterwards, add a slightly bigger oval around it to form the "outer ring"

Now, sharpen the upper and bottom edges of both ovals very slightly as illustrated below

You now have the base of a turtle shell

#2 The Costal and Vertebral Scutes

There's quite a bit to break down in this part, so let's take it one step at a time

First of all, what are scutes? Scutes are external plates found on the carapace of a turtle. In other words, you see those hexagonal shapes on the shell? Those are the scutes

Now, what are the costal and vertebral scutes? These are the scutes on the "inner ring" of the carapace that you drew in step one (Vertebral scutes are labeled with a "V", costal scutes are labeled with a "C")

As you can see, the vertebral scutes are located along the spine of the turtle. Meanwhile, the costal scutes surround the vertebral scutes

So, how do you draw the costal and vertebral scutes? We’ll break them down into three categories: The middle vertebral scutes, upper and lower vertebral scutes, and the costal scutes

The Middle Vertebral Scutes:

These are the only scutes that form a complete hexagon. They are located in the middle of the carapace. It’s important to note that in tmnt 2012 there’s only two of them. Now, you would expect these to be centered exactly in the middle of the carapace, but that's actually not entirely true. The middle vertebral scutes are actually placed slightly higher in the carapace rather than directly in the center

There's still one issue though, the belt the turtles wear. While the top middle vertebral scute is in full view, the bottom one is covered by the belt. Sure we could imagine what the bottom middle vertebral scute looks like, but we want to be accurate. Luckily, there's one scene in the show were we actually get to see it uncovered without the any gear in the way

In this frame where Leo's brothers are pulling him out of the tub we can see what the bottom middle vertebral scute looks like. Rather than being a perfect hexagon, it's more elongated and vertical

"Okay, that's nice and all but how do you actually draw any of this?"

For the top middle vertebral scute, you're going to want to draw a normal hexagon near the top of the carapace:

For the bottom middle vertebral scute, the process is similar. However, instead we're going to stretch out the lower half of the hexagon vertically to make it longer

The Upper and Lower Vertebral Scutes:

Due to the offset of the middle vertebral scutes, this makes the upper vertebral scute very small and the lower vertebral scute very big

To draw them, pay attention to where the red circles are. That's going to be where we will start connecting lines

First we're going to draw two diagonal lines upwards from the top middle vertebral scute where the corners are

Then from there we're going to draw two diagonal lines downwards from the bottom middle vertebral scute where the corners are

And just like that, the upper and lower vertebral scutes are completed

The Costal Scutes:

The costal scutes can be found surrounding the vertebral scutes. Drawing these scutes is actually quite easy

Once again, we're going to look at where the red circle are on the sketch. Those are the points where we will be connecting lines to

Starting with the top middle vertebral scute, we're going to draw lines at a slightly upward diagonal angle from where the middle points of the hexagon are

Now, we're going to repeat the same with the bottom middle vertebral scute. But, instead, we're going to draw the lines at a slightly downward diagonal angle

The costal and vertebral scutes of the carapace are now completed. Let's move onto the marginal scutes

#3 The Marginal Scutes

Alright, time to add some more details to your turtle shell. Now we're going to be focusing on the marginal scutes

The marginal scutes are the "outer ring" of the carapace

As you may have noticed, there's many cracks within the marginal scutes in tmnt 2012. But, did you notice there's a pattern to where they appear?

Each crack in the marginal scutes is located near the top of each costal scute with an additional two on the upper vertebral scute and four on the lower vertebral scute

To draw the cracks in the marginal scutes, first we're going to put them near the top of each costal scute

Next, we're going to draw the two cracks that are above the upper vertebral scute and the four that are below the lower vertebral scute

Note that the cracks on the upper vertebral scute are very close together. Meanwhile, the outer cracks on the lower vertebral scute are very far apart while the cracks in the center are very close together

And just like that, your carapace is now completed. You could technically stop here, but if you want to add more details then let's continue

Extras

Everything from here on out is optional to the tutorial and is just to help add some extra flare to your shell. Now, let's begin, shall we?

Creases:

One tip to add some extra detail into your shell is to thicken the creases of the scutes. This can add the illusion of depth into your artwork

Grooves:

While we don't have access to the models used in the tv show, we can take a look at the models from one of the video games

If we zoom in we see that there's grooves within the scutes in the pattern of a spiral. This is reflective of turtles in real life. By adding these spiral grooves into your drawings, you can add texture into your artwork

Define Your Marginal Scutes:

Another important detail to note: While not shown in any of the models, in real life the marginal scutes are actually comprised of many sections, rather than just one big outer rim. By separating the marginal scutes into sections you add both more realism and detail to your carapace

By combining all of these extra little details together our shell ends up looking like this

I hope you guys enjoyed the tutorial! This took a long time to make and there's so much more I could go into. But, I'm going to have to split them into different parts or else this post would never end

I want to end this with saying I am not an expert on any of this stuff. There's always a chance some of the information in these posts could be wrong. But, hopefully they're still helpful to you in some way
