I love the fact that you now have two different au's where it's like. "Prince Zuko has tragically died at sea. He's dead now. So very tragic." "Hey, WATER TRIBE here! LOOK WHO WE GOT!!!"
If you're trying to imply that I'm slowly building up a trope-drinking-game multiverse

my favorite ship dynamic is betrayal. not when they betray each other but when one or both of them turn against their cause, their principles and/or loved ones for the other. bonus points if the person they're abandoning everything for didn't remotely expect it. ultimate declaration of love. "you mean more to me than everything i ever believed in. i am more loyal to you than my conscience. i love you more than the thing i would die for."

Brainwashed Jetko au where both Jet and Zuko get taken by the Dai Li and are displaced in the big city.
Jet and Li find each other anyways.
(That luck however did not extend to their family and friends)
Its all good...then it catches up to them :D
been rewatching the scene where Joel finds Ellie after David because im trying to get a good reference photo so I've been rewatching that scene over and over again frame for frame and HOLY FUCK
the way Joel holds her and im not talking about their hug im talking about the way Joel holds her while she's fighting back in his arms with such ease like he doesn't just grab her arm and make her look at him no he at first garbs her arm but when she starts to scream and fight back and her legs give up Joel spins her around and is holding or at least trying to hold her like a new born like he's got one arm on her lower back and one on her upper back
and he's holding her till she has her knees on the ground and only ONLY when he knows she can't fall and hurt herself dose he slowly bring his hands up to her arms and then cups her face in his hands to then make her look at him and tell her "its me. its me"
AND A N D I M N O T D O N E. Joel. Joel Miller that parental motherfucker even has this worried "oh shit im about to drop my child" face while he's holding her like a newborn like OMFG HOW THE FUCK DID I NOT NOTICE THIS
like look at his face that’s a “im about to drop my child shit fuck shit “ face
for info I keep saying that Joel is holding Ellie like a newborn because when you hold a newborn you're supposed to have on arm around them supporting their back and one arm holding their head and he's holding Ellie the same way (obviously he can't hold her head in that moment because it would just make things worse but he still holds her like you would a newborn child) and this could be a parallel to how Anna held Ellie because she held her the same way.
Anna and Joel both held a screaming, fighting, bloody Ellie the same way.
I cannot do this anymore. im going to claw off my walls now and eat my own arm goodbye.
need a fic where butterflies start following ellie around and she has no idea sarah loved butterflies or there's any connection whatsoever but when they're sitting outside on the porch one day and a butterfly lands on ellie's shoulder joel thinks he's going to pass out
No outbreak AU where Sarah and Ellie are sisters and Joel's their dad. Sarah does soccer and Ellie does ballet (to everyone's surprise, she's pretty good). Except whenever Joel tells people that one of his daughters dances and the other one plays soccer they think it's the other way around. Just bc I think that could be fucking hilarious.
Bonus: Ellie and Dina meeting at dance :)
currently cackling about the idea of ellie lifting weights and practicing SPECIFICALLY because she WILL pick joel up one day so help her GOD
and the day she finally manages a fireman’s carry, joel is teasing her about being mighty mouse, and then she actually does it and joel’s just like O.O
i have. such a soft spot. for the idea of dyslexic ellie.
kiddo who tried SO FUCKING HARD in school but like. even in modern non-apocalyptic day it’s an issue, and it’s a government orphanage. there are just. not accomodations.
ellie who has grown up fucking struggling and not really knowing why and just feeling like she’s not as smart as everyone else. and having teachers who just. are not paid enough to either notice or take steps to help her. one of the reasons she LOVES her pun book so much is that it’s split up into easy-to-read little chunks, so she doesn’t struggle as much as she does with books with big paragraphs and a lot of text together.
also dyslexia can cause problems with orientation/navigation/directions (if i’ve mispoken on this, please do correct me! i’m speaking from having a roommate with dyslexia and googling), which also makes her frustration with the map in the kansas city episode hurt. bb is trying SO FUCKING HARD and her brain literally just CANNOT. and now there’s an adult getting frustrated and irritated with her and boy isn’t THAT familiar.
and she’s SO fucking nervous about starting school in jackson bc she has such a good thing with joel, but she knows how school is gonna go. she’s gonna go, the teacher will realize she’s stupid, then they’ll tell joel, then joel will know she’s stupid. she pitches a FIT not wanting to go but ends up going anyway bc it’s a hard line for joel.
and she goes in expecting to get made fun of or written off like fedra and instead her teacher takes her aside after class and gives her a WORD?? for what her brain does?? it’s not?? just her?? and she’s still SO fucking nervous to tell joel later bc great one more way she’s a problem for him to solve.
and instead joel just fucking goes to talk to her teacher and helps her do some research in the library to find accomodations for her?? what?? joel sitting down with her for her to practice reading with? and not even? getting frustrated with her?
lil bean just FINALLY getting the acceptance and support she needs to thrive
ellie would 100% love playing with all of the little kids in jackson when she first gets there
after her and joel actually adjust to living there a little, I think she would befriend all of the kids under the age of like 9 and when she’s not hanging out with joel she’s pretending to be a dinosaur with the local toddlers
joel is a little confused because “ellie, when I said you needed to make more friends that are kids I meant…your age. not the little kids. the teenagers.” but also he loves watching ellie interact with the little ones because she always looks so happy and excited giving them piggyback rides and telling them funny stories (plus, seeing her play around with the little kids is adorable, okay?).
ellie will definitely drag him into some of the games they play and since joel is a big softie and being a dad is practically in his blood he has to agree, and so a lot of the time “joel watching ellie play with the kids” turns into “tommy watching his brother get used as a jungle gym by ten 8 year olds and a teenager” and everyone in jackson who sees it thinks it’s the cutest thing ever
new parents of young children will come up to ellie and joel just to ask if they can watch their kids for a little bit while they take a break bc of how good they are with them. more often than not ellie and joel are being followed around by lines of little kids like ducklings following their mothers. joel complains about all of them to tommy but he secretly loves every second of it (and he also loves that him and ellie both seem to share a passion for taking care of the little shits) (he calls it a family trait at one point and ellie is delighted)
joel's hands are like a fidget toy for ellie! they'll be at tommy and maria's sitting around the kitchen table and long after dinner's over, joel will have his elbows resting on the table and ellie wordlessly grabs his hand and pulls it on her lap and traces his palm and knuckles, joel doesn't even react he just continues his conversation with tommy
I can imagine Ellie in Jackson making a kid army. Because every little kid think she’s so cool because she survived “the outside” and especially the younger kids have never seen that so they see her as a superhero. And she’s just corrupting every single one of them into annoying the hell out off all the adults.
i had the most MESSED UP idea last night where joel gets bit, but instead of attacking ellie he just gets like, ferally protective of her. (More than usual, i mean)
(Maybe this is because of her weird fungal variant, maybe because their love is ONE IN A MILLION or maybe some combination of the two idk)
Like ellie SOMEHOW got all his weapons from him before he could off himself, because she just couldnt watch him do that. Cordyceps!joel coming towards her, and she’s holding her knife up between them, sobbing because SHE CANT DO IT she cant hurt him, but he just pushes the knife aside and grabs her arm, inspecting her bite marks, sniffing her all the way up her arm to her neck to her head, then gathers her up in his arms under his chin. She can feel his lips on her hair, can hear him grunting in a strange rhythmic way, almost like he’s trying to hum. Eventually she feels something other than his lips on her head, realizes it’s the fungal tendrils coming from his mouth.
cordyceps!joel brings her dead deer and rabbits, destroys any infected who threaten her, cradles her like a baby when he can tell that she’s upset. When they come near humans, he heeds her when she makes him hide and not attack. (Except when the humans are raiders, she lets joel eat those.)
on the nights it’s so cold she needs a fire, cordyceps!joel sits 20 feet behind her, grumbling, until ellie yells at him to be quiet. (he is NOT a fan of the fire)
Joel eventually becoming a clicker. She leads him by the hand through the wilderness, learns to communicate with him by clicking just as much as talking. She finds herself in front of a mirror one day in an old cabin looking for supplies, and doesnt recognize herself. If anyone saw her they’d assume she was infected without a second thought.
Oh god HOW DOES IT END does he finally get taken down by a bullet, ellie holding him as he chokes on his own blood, soothing him with her voice because he doesnt even understand what’s happening??? Does she finally put him down, knowing joel is long gone and he wouldnt want to live like this?? do they continue on like that forever, until ellie’s forgotten how to speak? OH ITS TERRIBLE someone take it away from me
Good ol’ amnesia fic. Joel wakes up from a bad concussion and doesn’t remember Ellie. He initially feels apathy vs mild hostility bc how dare his past self think he could replace Sarah with any random fourteen-year-old girl? But something hits him deep in his gut when he catches a clearly upset Ellie with a bag of her stuff trying to sneak past him down the stairs. growls at her that there’s no need for her to move out. Softens his voice a little as he offers to move out, if that would make her more comfortable.
Tommy comforting her, arms around her shoulders as she clings to his chest and sobs
gah this would be sooo hard for Ellie. She will deserve so many cuddles once Joel comes to his senses
okay but the idea of ellie just. gaslighting people in jackson who try to be nosy and ask about her being adopted by maintaining that she’s his biological child
just totally deadpan “yeah everyone says i look JUST like him”
*visible confusion of someone DESPERATELY trying to make the math work*
Maria didn’t give Ellie a diva cup and new clothes and a new coat and trim her hair and warn her off the dangerous man she’s obviously bonded with and take her to the movies for us to sleep on her. She saw a feral orphan child and said ‘this kid needs to be MOTHERED’
imagine that video of a mother dog who keeps pulling the weird yellow feathered puppy (duckling) back into the bed
Ellie is a bit put off by Maria’s attentions at first, but as Maria gets bigger, and people are joking to her about ‘nesting’ and being a ‘mother hen’, Ellie’s like OH, she needs this. Its a little bit easier to let herself be taken care of then, becomes a way she can take care of what she’s starting to see as her little family, Joel and Tommy and Maria and the baby.
Joel getting a LITTLE jealous of how close Ellie and Maria get, like what are they talking about over there???? Why doesn’t she trust me to tell me about it??? Turns out there are some things it’s really hard to talk to your dad about, and how to act in front of your crush when you’re already the weird new kid is one of them.
Maria telling Ellie about how AWKWARD Tommy was when they first met/started liking each other, lol. Ellie will never let Tommy live it down
Whenever they have the chance, Ellie and Joel get matching clothes, usually sweatshirts.
The best places to find new ones are remote gift shops that haven't been picked over yet, but they will take anything they can get their hands on, starting a small collection. It's not clear who had the idea first, but they both love it more than they're willing to admit for exactly the same reason - it makes them look like a family, and, more specifically, the package deal they are. They don't actively coordinate their outfits, but if one of them wears a shirt they both have, the other one races to change as soon as they see it.
Everyone else finds it fucking adorable, not that anyone except Tommy would actually be brave enough to say it to their faces, but the people in Jackson like Joel and Ellie more than they know; it's the way they look at each other, really, the bubble of fondness surrounding them wherever they go.
Identical shirts pose one problem though, mostly for Joel. When they're scattered around their house, left on the couch or in his bed, slung over a kitchen chair, it's hard to see what size it is. Ellie loves wearing Joel's shirts, glowing with something adorably childlike whenever she does, but Joel cannot wear hers, and he has gotten stuck in them while trying to pull them on in a hurry more than once.
He complains to Tommy about it (with the biggest fucking smile, and his brother cannot for the life of him take his annoyance seriously), but he still comes up with a solution. After collecting all of their matching shirts, he commandeers their living room and stitches their initials where the clothing tag should be (Ellie hates them, they're itchy, so she cut them off). His embroidery is great, he even makes sure to use the right color schemes, and numb fingertips are worth the crushing hug Ellie gives him afterwards.
(She still steals Joel's shirts, just because she can.)
Once Ellie learns what a sleepover is, she regularly bullies Tommy into having them with her (he goes willingly but he makes her work for it nevertheless).
He's not only the cool Uncle tm but also the person she can talk to about stuff she doesn't always want to talk to Joel about, either because it would make him worry a lot or because it would be an incredibly awkward conversation she has no intention of having with him. Tommy knows how to keep a secret and he would never betray Ellie's trust.
They maneuver mattresses onto the living room floor and eat enough sugar to kill a small toddler. Most of the time, their nights consist of Ellie doing weird shit to his hair and painful face masks that she discovers in old magazines, watching movies Joel either deeply dislikes or doesn't want her to watch (trying to protect the last of her innocence, sweet attempt but futile, since nothing of that is left anyway), and gossiping; Tommy is GREAT at gossip.
Joel is a bit jealous that he isn't invited, but when he comes to pick her up in the mornings and sees her curled up with Tommy the exact same way he and Sarah would when he made his brother babysit, the bittersweet surge of affection is worth the comparably lonely night in his bed.
Ellie deserves every bit of family she can get.
Family breakfasts with Tommy have become somewhat of a routine.
He comes over on the days Maria leaves for her work early (which is more often than not), eats her granola and drinks Joel's coffee, and they talk about whatever they feel like, though Ellie loves asking him about his recent patrols. She kicks her feet up into Joel's lap and draws it out as long as she can before sprinting all the way to school, but it's worth it if it means just one more story.
Today, though, she's late. Really fucking late. It's not her fault she got a bit distracted by the new book Tommy had brought her last afternoon (it's about SPACE Joel, that trumps school and sleep by a mile), but now she had about five minutes to get out of the house and into the classroom. Ellie barrels down the stairs, bag slung over her shoulder, and has to catch herself on the banister to not slip on the floor once she jumps over the last few steps
"Careful, baby," Joel calls over, worriedly watching her put on her shoes while standing on one leg, jumping to keep her balance. Tommy, on the other hand, looks majorly amused, and she can hear him chuckle.
"Yeah, yeah, old man, I can keep my balance just fine."
She ties her laces so she doesn't trip once she starts running and is about to leave when Joel whistles to call her back.
"Breakfast, Ellie."
Fucking Joel and his stupid rules, but Ellie spins on the spot and uses the kitchen door frame to propel herself toward the counter and pick up two apples for later, stuffing them into her bag with a happy? thrown over her shoulder.
"Mh, have a nice day at school, kiddo," he tries to sound all parental, but she can hear the softness bleeding through and just knows he's holding back a grin. Ellie crosses the distance between them with two big steps and slings her arms around his neck, allowing herself the luxury of melting against him for a few precious seconds when he gently rubs his thumbs over her wrists and lifts her clasped hands to press a kiss to her knuckles.
With a heavy sigh and a silent fuck you to whoever invented math, she pulls back, but not without pressing a kiss to Joel's cheek, basking in the smile he gives her; it's so easy to make him happy, and she does it as much as she can.
Ellie can feel Tommy's eyes on them, he always watches them with a gleeful mixture of amusement and affection, and over the last year, he has settled into the warm parts of her heart, too. He is right between her and the door, sipping on his coffee, so, really, it's not even a conscious choice, more of a reflex.
Her hand comes down on the table when she steps toward the front door and away from Joel, balancing herself so she can lean around the back of his chair and press a quick kiss to his cheek, too. Ellie bites back the small laugh bubbling up when she sees the expression on his face, mouth slightly open, eyes seeking help from Joel, who simply shrugs and picks up his cup again.
Another minute ticks by on the kitchen clock, and she is finally on her way out, the goodbye she yells at them cut off when the front door slams close behind her.

("What the hell was that?"
"She is laying her claim on you."
"Whatever that means, Joel, she's your kid, not mine."
"Better get ready to give up your personal space and half your closet."
"My clothes, really?"
"You never know what she might do next, prepare for the worst."
"Are you sure she's not yours? 'Cause this sounds oddly familiar."
"Oh, she is, she just found me all on her own."
"Glad she did, haven't seen you smile like that in twenty years."
"Give it a week and I'll tell you the same thing.")
All of the Jackson parents being super jealous of Joel because his kid actually seems to LIKE him and will like walk with him and sit next to him and go in for hugs and stuff
