“Are you out of your mind?” Zuko rushed across the courtyard and bore down on Aang with an intense, almost palpable fury. “Do you know how badly you could’ve hurt her?”
“I was just…I didn’t mean to-“ Aang stammered.
“Fire is not a toy!” Zuko bellowed at him. He turned to Katara, examining her for injuries. “Are you okay?”
“I’m alright,” she assured him, her voice shaking. “I’m fine.” She was trembling visibly, and there were singe marks on her clothes, but she otherwise seemed unharmed. Zuko turned back to Aang, how was looking down at his feet in shame.
“What were you thinking?” Zuko demanded.
“I don’t know,” Aang mumbled, kicking at the ground. “I was…mad.”
“About what?” Zuko was absolutely bewildered. “What could Katara possibly have done that you thought it was a good idea to do that?”
“Nothing,” Aang admitted sullenly. He didn’t say anything after that. Zuko glowered at him, took a few deep breaths to quell his own anger.
“You’re going to clean this mess up,” he said gesturing to the torn up stones, dirt and cooling lava. “Then you’re going to do 100 fire squats. Then you’re going to work on your forms for an hour. And I don’t want to see so much as a curl of smoke out of you. You’re not responsible enough for fire. Understood?”
“What? That’s not-“ Aang’s protests died on his lips when he saw Zuko’s expression. He huffed, kicked at stone, and finally nodded.
“Get started,” Zuko ordered through clenched teeth. He turned back to Katara, who was watching the exchange. She was still shaking a bit. Zuko draped his arm protectively around her back and guided her away. He glanced back once more at Aang, and almost rolled his eyes when he saw the younger boy still moping at the ground. It was hard sometimes to reconcile the awesome might and eminence of the Avatar with the reality of Aang, the child.
“I’ll be back,” he warned Aang. “Have this mess cleaned up. And don’t even think about asking Toph to help.”
I know canonically, the Lava Fissure Incident takes place while Zuko and Sokka are rescuing Hakoda, but I wanted to have Zuko see and react to it. Personally, I think it was another accidentally accurate depiction of how unready Aang is to be the Avatar. And it is also another incident that the narrative decides not to call Aang out for, so the chances of him growing from it are...well, we all know how things turned out in LoK.
au where Zhao survives to see Zuko become Fire Lord and in their first meeting after the fact Zuko’s like “I am the leader of a nation and I will be a mature adult and I will not insult you BUT MY FRIENDS CAN, SOKKA GET IN HERE” and he makes Zhao stand there while Sokka roasts him for like an hour
pass it on
If Sarah had lived she would’ve been the most polite and kind person Jackson while they were there. And yeah, she would have trained Ellie to use manners
Sarah: Ellie this is my uncle Tommy-
Tommy: and you found her in a trash can?
Sarah: yeah, but I trained her. Watch! Ellie, say hello.
Ellie, extremely pissed: hello mister Tommy thank you for your kindness for Miss Sarah and I.
And then there’s Joel
Tommy: you found this one in the trash can?
Joel, watching Ellie terrorize Jackson: yeah, ain’t she great?
Tommy:
Maria: she’s a demon spawn
Tommy: we love her, Joel.
Cut Fruit 🍎🍓🍈🍊🍑
-
In Asian cultures, one of the most common forms of affection by a parent is to carefully peel and cut fruit. My mom would typically cut apples, but parents will prepare any fruit that’s available. I am loathe to think Iroh wouldn’t do the same for Zuko.
(this is also a nice article that explains the feelings behind it more)
Whenever they have the chance, Ellie and Joel get matching clothes, usually sweatshirts.
The best places to find new ones are remote gift shops that haven't been picked over yet, but they will take anything they can get their hands on, starting a small collection. It's not clear who had the idea first, but they both love it more than they're willing to admit for exactly the same reason - it makes them look like a family, and, more specifically, the package deal they are. They don't actively coordinate their outfits, but if one of them wears a shirt they both have, the other one races to change as soon as they see it.
Everyone else finds it fucking adorable, not that anyone except Tommy would actually be brave enough to say it to their faces, but the people in Jackson like Joel and Ellie more than they know; it's the way they look at each other, really, the bubble of fondness surrounding them wherever they go.
Identical shirts pose one problem though, mostly for Joel. When they're scattered around their house, left on the couch or in his bed, slung over a kitchen chair, it's hard to see what size it is. Ellie loves wearing Joel's shirts, glowing with something adorably childlike whenever she does, but Joel cannot wear hers, and he has gotten stuck in them while trying to pull them on in a hurry more than once.
He complains to Tommy about it (with the biggest fucking smile, and his brother cannot for the life of him take his annoyance seriously), but he still comes up with a solution. After collecting all of their matching shirts, he commandeers their living room and stitches their initials where the clothing tag should be (Ellie hates them, they're itchy, so she cut them off). His embroidery is great, he even makes sure to use the right color schemes, and numb fingertips are worth the crushing hug Ellie gives him afterwards.
(She still steals Joel's shirts, just because she can.)

Zukka neighbors AU, enemies to lovers 100k+
while it's not the same story i got the idea from @kurisu-80's neighbors AU comic, which i definitely recommend checking out, i think about it a lot
Bow before Chieftess Yue and her consort Chief-King Zuko.
Zukos rank is directly below Yue, which was decided by them. Arnook and the council didn't like the idea, since that goes against their culture, but Zuko was raised in a society where gender doesn't determine role. He loves his wonderful, intelligent, determined wife. She's a great leader and Zuko is a good support.
Rare Pair Month 2021 day 5: disguise
