You know how purple is considered a royal color IRL? In a Zutara AU, it earns that reputation because of them.
Zuko and Katara originally just wear robes of red and blue (Katara blue with red accents, Zuko red with blue accents) but over time they start requesting purple pieces of clothing, and are soon wearing lots of purple with some red and blue. Their kids grow up wearing mostly purple, and thus the next few Firelords, all with significant Water Tribe heritage wear purple. Then the Fire Nation transitions to a true democracy and the throne is abolished, and the living family fades into comfortable obscurity. However, by this time several generations grew up with the Firelord wearing purple. With the origins of its use by the throne, purple is soon used as a symbol in fiction for both power and love against all odds.

Working on (yet another) ATLA wip in which during the invasion Azula helps Zuko escape and goes with him (because her beloved dumbass of a brother clearly has not been paying attention to all her subtle warnings on how not to get dead and clearly needs a more direct approach at keeping him alive and mostly in one piece). And in the process of getting the fuck out of dodge, Bato who's been separated from everyone else ends up accidentally crashing their escape party along with Toph and the four of them end up on the run together.
Toph gets along with the two runaway royals who are as suspicious and untrusting if Bato as he is them...at least until the fire siblings unintentionally trauma dump about their fucked up childhood and Bato decides "I'm dad now" and adopts them against their will.
Eventually Azula and Zuko just give up on fighting it and are like "okay cool, you're gonna be Firelord after we kill Ozai and then we can just chill for like, five god damn seconds"
And anyway eventually they all meet up with the Gaang and Hakoda and co and it's just like...
Hakoda:
This is my daughter Katara: Master Water Bender, Teacher of the Avatar, brave and true of heart.
And my son Sokka: genius inventor, master strategist, unmatched in his fierceness and loyalty.
Bato:
This is my new daughter Azula. She'll sell your soul to satan for a fire flake and then use that fire flake to take over hell.
And this is my new son Zuko. He's faral and will probably bite you. Don't leave him alone too long or he'll probably end up trying to fight god again.
And this is Toph... I don't know if I've adopted her or if I'm being held hostage but either way I've started saving up for the next time I have to bail her out of jail.

Zuko and Katara got into a habit of calling each other cringe pet names out of spite when they're enemies to make each other angrier. And no one understands why.
"Oh, it's you sweetheart" she said with a sultry voice, but there's also a subtle hint of anger lies underneath her tone. She uncaps her waterskin and smirks.
"Hello again, darling" Zuko says, teasing her but his voice's also full of hatred.
They run towards each other and their battle cries mingle.
Toph wonders whether they were gonna end up make out or shredding each other in pieces.
Have you thought about Zoeymau recently? Here’s your incentive
Iroh: Have you guys seen Prince Zuko?
Jee: No, haven’t seen him since the storm started.
Iroh: Since the sto- ZUKO NO!
Zuko standing in the middle of a thunderstorm with an iron shovel raised high: STRIKE ME DOWN ZEUS, YOU DON’T HAVE THE GUTS!!!
“You killed him?!” Aang shouted. “What about forgiveness? You said-“
“I never said anything!” Katara glared. “Forgiveness may work for you, Aang, but I never said it would for me.”
Aang turned towards Zuko with rage plain on his face. “Zuko, how could you let her?”
Zuko’s eyes narrowed. “I didn’t ‘let her’ do anything. It was her decision.”
“So you’re really okay with Murder?” Aang glared.
“He was a murderer first.” Zuko reminded. “He slaughtered hundreds- thousands even- and you’re really saying things would be better if he were still around? That Katara is just as bad as him?”
“Murder is wrong.” Aang scoffed. “No matter how you justify it-”
“My mother killed my grandfather,” Zuko said gravely.
Aang’s eyes widened. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“It means that women usually have reasons for killing men. And most of the time, those reasons are noble.” Zuko clarified. “But I do find it telling that you think Katara is unable to make her own choices and needs to rely on the permission of a man to justify her actions.”
“I never said-”
“No?” Zuko questioned. “Then why are you asking me about her decisions when Katara has been here this entire time and can speak for herself?”
