this is my favorite photo I’ve ever taken, i took it the summer my father died. in ‘21
it aches in me to recall how beautiful that summer was, how bright, and soft, and golden. it held me, until the corn was at it’s highest and then he died. sickness haunted him until his skin was thin over sharp bone, his voice a scraping, rattling whisper in his chest.
that sparkle of the light through leaves, cascading over shining water. three summer months, death seeped into a man’s body and decorated it into a home.
i observed two poignant things that summer, the lush vivacity and beauty of life, and the inevitably of an end to it all.

a souvenir of grief and pain is strength and understanding and compassion for others. good things to carry.
also, i keep having to remind myself to have the same grace in myself as i do for others. here is my reminder for the day. be gentle.
the cycle of grief and joy and everything in between is simultaneously comforting and terrifying. yes, i will feel pain again, yes, i will feel joy again. yes, i am human.
guilt is thick, like a quilt draped up to my neck. thankfully the sun that dances on my wall in the morning coaxes it into a thin veil. i remember to breathe
Buffy Summers is my best friend. She is my wife. She is my sister. She is my daughter. She is my mother. She is the childhood friend I still think about. She is my first crush. She is the stranger I made eye contact with on the train for a little too long. She is the love of my life. She is me. Buffy Summers is everything.
