I'm loving Dungeon Meshi's mix of quasi-probable magical biological realism and "It's magic fuck you."
Red dragons swallow their prey whole and use the undigestible remains as fuel for their fire breath, which is lit by creating a spark with their tongue. Living armors are colonies of mollusks who expand and contract to mimic muscle movement. Actually "man-eating" plants is a misnomer, they catch small animals with a filament that retracts when touched and they use their decomposing prey as compost.
These mushrooms can turn you into a gnome. It's magic fuck you.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle AU.
Teens Tommy, Tubbo, Purpled, and Ranboo are supposed to spend their detention day clearing out the school’s basement-that goes south when they stumble upon a video game that’s much more than meets the eye, and are quickly dragged in over their heads.
Wilbur, Phil, and Techno are all brothers. Fundy has Alex’s role, stumbling upon the game years ago, and getting sucked in.
Phil is Tommy’s dad, however, he spends a lot of time trying to get Wilbur back on his feet after the loss of his son, to the point of Tommy often feeling neglected and unseen. Thus causing him to cause trouble in school to gain some of his father’s time.
Techno’s the teacher in charge of their detention, putting them together in hopes they’d forge a friendship.
Purpled has a disregard for authority, due to pretty much raising himself while his brother worked to keep a roof over their heads. He doesn’t see a reason to do things a certain way when he can do them much more efficiently his own way, leading him to get into arguments with his teachers quite often.
Tubbo is Tommy’s former childhood friend, the two drifting apart over time. He often gets in trouble purposely, to have an excuse not to go home to his father, Schlatt, who’s either drinking, or too busy working too acknowledge him.
And Ranboo is just a target for bullies, often getting dragged into fights and blamed for things he doesn’t do, to the point of seeing no reason trying to deny it when he’ll only get in trouble for it anyway.
When they’re dragged into Jumanji, they find themselves allied with NPCs that seem more human than not, and on a quest to complete the dangerous game in order to get home.
Tommy becomes Theseus Crafter, a young librarian with access to a ton of books and knowledge, and was in the jungle following his mentor, Ghostbur.
Ranboo becomes Ran Wastaken, the deadly assassin and younger sibling of antagonist Dream, who saw his brother’s corruption, and set off to stop him.
Tubbo becomes Tobias Halo, the youngest member of the Halo family, who are explorers and treasure hunters by trade.
Purpled becomes Hunter ‘Lavender’ Rose, blossoming botanist and cousin of underground fighter Hannah Rose.
Fundy is Ren Todd, a brilliant spy, who’s been working under Dream for years to collect info on him.
To finish the game, they’ll have to collect their various allies, free Dream from the Demon’s Mask, and return the jewel he stole to it’s rightful place in order to break the curse on the land.
Wow, those kind of look familiar too. Maybe I've seen them in media before.
I've made this post like six times but it still fucks me up the China's mountains just look like that. Like I spent decades thinking it was stylistic but no, they just have different mountains over there.
Lots of jokes get made in modern comics and fandom about the pejorative double entendre of Dick Grayson’s given/chosen nickname for Richard, and it IS funny, but I want to give a moment of appreciation for the other, kind of brilliant, double meaning that’s unfortunately fallen out of common modern usage, but would have been way more common when he was first named in 1940.
He’s literally named “detective” you guys, there is no way the World’s Greatest Detective’s partner wasn’t named this way on purpose.
Add to this the way the fandom loves to explore the 21st century reveal/retcon of Dick Grayson’s Romani heritage, and the possible etymology of the word, and you have a goldmine of largely untapped, to my knowledge, discussion of thoughts from Dick Grayson and the people around him about the relationship between his identity, the life he chose, the things he chooses to honor/remember, and the persistence of a nickname that has fallen increasingly out of favor in most other modern contexts.
I love when it’s as simple as “it’s his name and there’s no reason to change it”, but I also think there’s just lots of room for him to also have Real Thoughts about it throughout his life.
So…the fox sees the future.
Yikes.
Anyway. AU where Tubbo’s a fox hybrid like Fundy and they bond over that and look out for each other. Tubbo quickly becomes his favorite uncle, and is the first person who little Fundy tells about his spooky, weird dreams. He was gonna tell Eret too, the day of the Final Control Room, but, well…the sentence speaks for itself.
Tubbo ages normally because he’s more human, with just the ears, tail, slightly better senses, and some instincts. Meanwhile, Fundy can shift fully between a fox, human, and hybrid form, and has got the whole package, thus aging quicker. Basically just those two being close, and watching each other’s back, and maybe me seeing how much I can make this shift canon. Idk.
Another interesting fan idea, aka another fix-it fic I would read if it existed
you know what could have been a better season 4 plot?
ben spiked everyone's drink and the powers came back but everyone's were mixed.
ben got five's power and in the subway found jen, and in an attempt to stop the cleanse because he thinks he bought it he hops on trains with jen trying to stop things. the five and lila romance element goes to them and makes more sense.
As I’m trying to come to terms with whatever the fuck that was, I’ve decided that:
Seasons 1 and 2 are peak. Absolute masterpieces. Canon.
Season 3 can be taken or left. Has its moments, but overall not as good as the first two. Canon, but only if you want it to be.
Season 4 is a fucking crack fic written at 2am that the author rereads at a later date and decides to delete. Absolutely not canon.
AU where the Bench Trio, young and having not met yet, end up in the DC Universe-Gotham, more specifically, just a bit before Jason becomes Robin, and are taken in by the eventual Gotham City Sirens.
Tubbo ends up stranded on a roof a few days after being abandoned in his box. He’s found by Selina, who ended up taking him in for a few days while trying to track down his parents. By the time she realized there was no trace of Tubbo or his parents around, she’d become far too attached to just drop him off at some orphanage, and instead, took him in as her own.
Tommy was found by Harley Queen when she stumbled across him crying in the street. With the Joker currently in Arkham, and feeling sympathetic due to her own childhood, Harley took him in. Though it was meant to be temporary, it didn’t remain that way, with him quickly growing on her.
Poison Ivy finds a young Ranboo heavily wounded in Robinson Park, after a deadly battle in Hypixel, that he had no chance to survive without the Respawn. With her soft spot for children, as well as feeling a kinship for his physical oddities, Ivy saved his life by injecting him with the same serum that created her, and took him under her wing when it became apparent he’d been accepted by the Green.
As a result of the serum, Ranboo’s white side becomes light green, and his black side gains a dark forest undertone to it.
Tubbo eagerly delves into the technology of this world as he grows older, becoming quite skilled with it.
Though Harley did her best to keep him from the Joker and shield him, Tommy still took notice of the abuse, and grew to hate the Joker, which would only grow stronger after Jason’s death, and Joker’s attempts on their lives.
The Bench Trio is drawn together by the similar energy they emit due to being from the same universe. Because of this, they quickly grow close, and the Sirens are formed much sooner.
At some point, a nineteen year old Wilbur ends up in the universe with his one-year old son, Fundy. He stumbles upon Tommy and Harley doing crime, and his little brother instantly recognizes him. Once Harley realizes this is the brother who raised her kid, she’s quick to take him under her wing as well, and help him with Fundy.
Tommy’s villain name is Jester, not sure about the others. Ranboo’s is maybe some black and white flower, and Tubbo’s is feline related, but other than that, I’m lost.
Though villain is a loose term. Sure, they steal stuff, and cause some mayhem, but they also protect those who call for them, and fiercely defend their own.
Ranboo’s got a spot in Robinson Park where they’ve messed with the climate so he can grow End plants.
AU where the world is overtaken by the Crimson, and overall just kind of coming to an end. Foolish and Tubbo are some of the last survivors, and out of respect for Eret, Foolish wants to protect at least one of the people they cared for, since he couldn’t protect her, or anyone else.
So he uses the last dregs of his power to toss Tubbo into a different world, free of the crimson-except, it kind of goes wrong, because Tubbo doesn’t end up in a different world, he ends up in a different universe entirely.
A universe where supernatural creatures and the people that hunt them run amongst humanity.
So Tubbo gets a job as a hunter, because it’s easy and doesn’t require much(because they all keep dying, so new hunters are always needed), but he’s more reasonable than the majority, and also chill, so he gets along with a lot of the creatures he’s supposed to be killing.
Ends up adopting this universe’s version of himself after finding him on the side of the road. This version of him is like, six, and also apparently part siren, so…that’s interesting. Older Tubbo takes on the name Tobias to avoid confusion.
Shortly after this, Tobias is adopted by the Karlnapity of this universe, after a series of amusing events that leads to them talking more, and growing closer.
He eventually also befriends the SBI Coven through Ranboo and Tommy, the son’s of it’s feared leader, a vampire known as the Angel of Death.
At some point Tobias finds Michael, who, in this world is a young pure-blood vampire who’s family was killed in a battle between covens. Tubbo discovers him hiding when hunters raid the dead family’s home, and ends up hiding him from then until he’s able to find Tommy and Ranboo, who help him out.
Basically just light-hearted shenanigans with some doses of angst.
Karl’s a vampire, Sapnap’s a demon, and Quackity’s a shapeshifter.
Ranboo’s a pureblood vampire who’s coven was wiped out years ago, and he was taken in as a child by Philza.
Tobias is a adaptive hybrid, so he takes on the traits of those around him, for many reasons-because he feels safe with them, because he really, really doesn’t, and so on. He has no control over it, besides being able to somewhat shift his features to a different person he cares for.
The thing is, hybrids are very, very rare here, and adaptive hybrids most certainly aren’t a thing.
So it results in a lot of chaos, between him unintentionally taking on Karlnapity and Tubbo’s traits, and everyone dealing with the resulting instincts, it takes a bit for them to get used to it.
On the bright side, when Tobias shifts into a vampire while he’s sleeping over at the SBI Coven, the trio gets the joy of seeing the SBI, some of the most powerful vamps in the world, spooked as they watch Tobias take on Sapnap’s traits and start munching on a steak.
guys! secret ending when you beat the spire with Agent 4's palette 444 times! my uncle's cousin's cat works at Squid Research Lab and he told me!
I'm not coping with Agent 4's near absence in Side Order, you are
I've actually kinda shoehorned Four into my headcanon/oc version of Side Order lol
if you want to hear how I made them fit, I'd be glad to tell you :)
